You Don’t Need to Say Sorry: A Note from Your Childless Friend
Dear Mom Friends,
I totally get that you’re juggling a lot these days. Motherhood has shifted your world, and it’s natural to feel overwhelmed. But please, don’t let my presence add to your feelings of guilt. I care about you way too much for that.
I notice how you apologize when your little one interrupts us for the umpteenth time or when your toddler suddenly needs a bathroom break. I see the look on your face when your baby cries yet again, and I know you worry about whether I mind waiting while you put your kids to bed. I can imagine you feel bad when it takes you ages to respond to my texts or calls. But listen closely: there’s no need to say sorry.
Kids will be kids! Babies cry, toddlers have accidents, and children can be rambunctious. That’s just part of life.
As your friend, I want to be included in your life, and that means embracing your kids too. Remember those days of sleepovers and late-night talks? I’m still here for you in this new chapter of parenthood. If we used to bond over wine and discussions, I’m still your friend whether we are chatting at home or at the playground while your kids play and interrupt us every half a minute.
Give yourself some grace. It’s perfectly fine that your home isn’t spotless and that you might be in the middle of laundry chaos. In fact, I’m happy to help out! Just like we used to tackle homework and moving together, I’m here for you now too. Plus, I might have kids someday, so think of this as great practice!
I never expected you to be perfect, and I certainly don’t expect it now. Life can be messy, and that’s okay! I have my own chaos too—maybe it doesn’t crawl or cry, but it’s there.
I love you and care about what matters in your life, even if it looks different from mine. Let’s navigate this journey together, no matter how it unfolds.
So really, my friend, you don’t owe me an apology. Just ask how I’m doing and share what’s going on in your world. If our conversation gets interrupted by your adorable little ones, that’s absolutely fine with me!
With love,
Your Childless Friend
