If My Child Is Misbehaving, Please Let Me Know

Lately, I’ve found myself in some tricky situations where I wasn’t sure how to react. For instance, one time my child got hurt by a friend’s kid—accidentally hit in the head with a rock. Should I speak up? The other child clearly felt remorse, but still, I hesitated to say anything.

In another case, I heard from someone I’m friendly with that their teenager was involved in some risky and illegal behavior. If it were my kid, I’d want to know, but then again, should I say something or just stay out of it?

I think many parents face these dilemmas. So, let me be clear: If my child throws a rock and it hits yours, please tell me. It doesn’t matter if it was an accident. If my child is disrespectful to you, I want to know. If they’re experimenting with drugs, please inform me. If you see my child in a questionable situation, I’d appreciate a heads-up.

Even if you aren’t sure about something—like if my kid might have had too much to drink at a party or if they’ve lied to me—I want you to speak up. If my child is bullying others, or just being a general nuisance, please let me know.

And it goes beyond just my kids. If you notice anything awkward about me, like a visible booger or my skirt tucked into my undies, I’d hope you’d tell me.

If you think my child is spending time with the wrong crowd—drug users, dealers, or anyone who seems inappropriate—I want to hear about it. If my child is doing something online that you wouldn’t want your kid to do, please reach out.

If there’s something else on your mind that isn’t listed here, don’t hesitate. Just start with, “Remember when you said…” and we can go from there.
