A Prayer for Parents at the End of the School Year

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we approach the end of the school year, we humbly come before You on behalf of parents everywhere. Please lend an ear to our end-of-year prayer.

Oh Lord, help us escape the chaos of forgotten lunch packing and neglected backpack checks. Guide us through those long evenings when daylight lingers, yet bedtime looms, all while the school bus still shows up like clockwork each morning.

Sustain us through the whirlwind of May’s endless special events, programs, and projects. Remind us that these moments are meant to be joyful and not a test of our endurance.

Grant us the strength to keep our focus on our kids during baseball games, choir performances, award ceremonies, and soccer matches. Let them feel the love that brings us to those uncomfortable bleachers, even as we sneak in a few rounds of Candy Crush on our phones. We might be barely holding it together, but our cheers are heartfelt, even if our eyes are weary from witnessing so much this year.

Lord, steer us away from the temptation of packing stale Easter candy as a meal. Help us to at least upgrade to some decent prepackaged yogurt, applesauce, and the occasional Little Debbie snack cake. We need to maintain some semblance of standards here.

In those moments when we feel like we can’t handle another history timeline, math worksheet, or book report, remind us that there’s a teacher on the receiving end who has to grade that work too. Let us not forget to send a prayer their way for their patience and understanding.

May teachers be forgiving when we inevitably lose yet another permission slip for the end-of-year field trip, forget pajama day, or send our kids off in pants that are too short as we struggle to transition to summer wear. And if our kids confess to late-night ice cream binges and iPad marathons, please know they are telling the truth, and the bedtime battles are all too real. Forgive us for our desperate choices.

We pray that sports jerseys and overdue library books miraculously resurface when we need them. May clean socks multiply like loaves and fishes, and let’s all agree that frozen pizza and waffles five nights a week is a perfectly valid, if not varied, nutritional plan that won’t lead to our demise before June.

Most importantly, dear Lord, grant us the grace to survive May without losing our minds, our children, or the will to carry on. Because right now, all three are hanging by a thread.

Amen.
