Why Moms Should Celebrate Grandparents Day

This year, my Mother’s Day was enjoyable, albeit a bit hectic. I volunteer at my church on the second Sunday of each month, caring for kids aged three to six, which meant I had to be there bright and early. Afterward, we enjoyed a lovely picnic and a short hike at a nearby winery, with the weather being absolutely perfect. I even managed to fit in a load of laundry and prepare salads for both my mom and myself before heading out.

However, as I scrolled through Facebook, I noticed friends reveling in extravagant Mother’s Day celebrations that spanned the entire weekend. While I was sharing half my day with my mother, they were seemingly indulging in all things motherhood. This made me a little frustrated. After all, I already share my space, meals, and even my bathroom time with my kids. Shouldn’t I get at least one full day dedicated entirely to me?

Yet, I do have a mother to celebrate, and I know many friends who have lost their moms or whose mothers live far away or aren’t involved in their lives. I feel incredibly grateful for my mom and the time we spend together, and she truly deserves to be honored.

But what if we could have our own special day? After some research, I found out that Grandparents Day falls on September 7 this year. This holiday, which was officially recognized by Congress in 1978, deserves more attention.

To make the most of it, I’ve added a reminder on my phone to collaborate with my kids’ schools this August to create crafts for Grandparents Day. The school year will still be fresh, and the kids will likely enjoy the project, especially since they won’t be burned out from other celebrations.

Plus, next year, I plan to adjust my volunteer schedule so that I’m not busy on Mother’s Day—because that day should be all about me!

Are you on board with this, fellow moms? Let’s embrace the celebration of our parents and, in turn, claim a day just for ourselves! For more insights on parenting and family life, check out this helpful resource.
