Yesterday, while attending a yoga class, I experienced a moment of revelation—my usual place for clarity. Our instructor prompted us to think of someone who loves us unconditionally, urging us to dedicate our practice to them. Naturally, my thoughts turned to my children. Their love is abundant, fierce, and completely unreserved. Then, she posed a question that struck me: Are we reciprocating that same love? Do they truly know how deeply we care for them? It left me pondering… do they?
I frequently reflect on the legacy I’m crafting for my children—the memories and impressions they will carry with them. What kind of role model am I being? When they look back on their childhood, what feelings and lessons will they associate with me? Am I embodying the values I want to instill in them? Am I treating them in a manner that I would appreciate for myself?
As a single mother and the sole leader of our household, it’s all too easy to get lost in the daily grind of chores, errands, and responsibilities. In doing so, I sometimes overlook the precious moments I share with my kids. Time is fleeting, and soon they will embark on their own journeys, leaving me with limited opportunities to positively shape their lives. Each day, each hour, and each minute is a chance to connect with them.
Yes, I am the one responsible for their discipline and accountability—and yes, that can often feel overwhelming. Yet, it’s also a tremendous privilege. I have the unique opportunity to influence their lives in ways that could last a lifetime. What a remarkable gift that is!
During my practice, I came to a powerful and joyful realization: I will love my children each day as if it were the last day I have with them. Because, in truth, it is. The children they are today will transform into different individuals tomorrow. I will never have this exact moment with them again. When they wake up tomorrow, they will have already changed.
Thus, I embrace the honor of leaving the best possible impression on my kids in every moment available to me. This is my path to success as a single mother. I will approach each day as if it’s a day that will define how I will be remembered.
