I Had a Rough Day as a Mom

Hey friend, I’ve got to admit, I really dropped the ball on the mom front today. At least, that’s how it feels.

I started the day being a bit selfish—I poured myself a cup of coffee before even thinking about changing the baby’s diaper. Not my proudest moment. Then, I was too weak, losing my cool when our toddler, Mia, refused to eat any of the food I offered her. It’s like I turned into the enforcer, saying “no” way more than I said “yes.” Honestly, I found myself talking through clenched teeth more than I care to admit.

You know those people who say, “Enjoy every moment”? I think they must have a selective memory when it comes to parenting. It’s not all sunshine and rainbows. The closest I got to a rainbow today was when the baby decided to shart a bunch of colorful bits of crayons on the floor. Yep, not my finest hour.

No matter how hard I try, I often feel like I fall short of the mom I aspire to be. But if I linger too long on what I should’ve done differently, I know I’ll drive myself crazy. So, I have to remind myself to focus on the good stuff too. After all, I had some pretty great mom moments today as well.

I was the fun mom who built an epic pillow fort. I was patient, waiting a solid ten minutes for Mia to “buckle herself in” (which really meant she was just stalling until I helped her out). I was thoughtful, putting my phone away to cuddle with the kids on the couch. And let me tell you, I was compassionate, kissing boo-boos and hugging away tears.

Being a parent means wanting the absolute best for our little ones—not just average, but the very best. And that pressure we put on ourselves can be overwhelming at times. It’s not healthy to fixate on our mistakes without acknowledging the good things we do, right? Sometimes, it feels like we’re hardwired to focus on the negatives. “Mommy guilt” is a term I hear thrown around a lot, but what about “Mommy pride”? I think we deserve that too.

We’ve done some incredible things. We brought life into the world, nourished our little humans with our bodies, and sacrificed sleep for their needs. We’ve cleaned up some really messy situations, and most importantly, we’ve poured our hearts into loving them. A mother’s love is truly something special—selfless, nurturing, and unconditional.

When we take a moment to reflect, it’s clear that the good outweighs the bad. Each day is a dance of ups and downs, filled with imperfections. But that’s not what defines our journey. It’s about being aware of our actions, holding it together when the chaos feels overwhelming, and finding our balance again.

Sometimes we trip up, and other times we hit the high notes, but we always find our footing again. And hopefully, we learn to balance a little better each day.

Summary

Parenting can be a rollercoaster ride filled with ups and downs. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and focus on the negatives, but it’s essential to recognize our achievements and the love we offer our children. Each day brings new challenges, but with patience and self-compassion, we find our balance and celebrate our victories, both big and small.
