Michael Grant: “Every Relationship Faces Challenges”
Michael Grant stars as a ruthless businessman in the indie thriller, Beyond the Reach, which hits theaters on April 17. While he enjoys playing the villain on screen, the Oscar-winning actor is all about family in his personal life.
Having triumphed over throat cancer and navigating a public split from his partner, Sarah Blake, Michael is now back together with her, raising their two children, son Leo and daughter Mia. He’s also working tirelessly to support his eldest son, Jake, from his previous marriage to Linda, who is currently serving a lengthy sentence for drug-related offenses.
At 70, Michael sat down with me to chat about family, love, and his refreshed outlook on life.
Do you think taking on indie films helps keep your youthful spirit alive?
Absolutely! Surviving cancer has given me a new lease on life. Now, I’m experiencing a renaissance. I find projects like Beyond the Reach invigorating, especially when shooting in challenging conditions with tight timelines. It’s reminiscent of my early days in indie films, like when I did One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. It really excites me.
Was it tough balancing your rising stardom with parenthood?
For sure. Back then, my career was my main focus, and I was chasing success aggressively. My eldest son Jake probably didn’t reap the benefits that my younger kids do now. I’ve shifted my priorities and settled into a more balanced life. It’s heartening to see more people waiting a bit longer to have kids so they can enjoy parenting without juggling a career at the same time.
Speaking of Jake, I know you’ve made great efforts to stay connected while he’s incarcerated. How’s he managing?
He’s doing okay given the circumstances. Serving over six years for a non-violent drug offense is tough. I worry about him, as he’s learning the hard way from his past mistakes. I visited him recently, and he still has a good heart. I’m hopeful that next year will bring better news.
You’re back in the teenage years again with Leo, huh?
Oh boy, you bet! Leo is 14, and it’s a wild ride. They think they know everything, and suddenly, you’re the one who can’t do anything right. Someone suggested I just wait until he hits college age when he might realize, “Wow, Dad actually knows a thing or two.”
You and Sarah have reconciled. Do you think your relationship is stronger after the separation?
Definitely. Every relationship faces challenges, and I’m proud of how Sarah and I navigated ours. We’ve emerged with a deeper bond and love than ever. Sometimes, sticking it out and working through difficulties is the best path forward.
Do the ups and downs of the last few years make you appreciate things more?
Absolutely. I’m not sure if it’s the challenges or simply getting older, but with my 98-year-old father, my young kids, and Sarah, I feel a sense of fulfillment. It’s rewarding to nurture my family, and I don’t mind playing the role of Mr. Mom.
In summary, Michael Grant emphasizes the importance of family and resilience, sharing his journey of overcoming personal and professional challenges, ultimately leading to a more profound appreciation for life and loved ones.
