A Guide to Enjoying a Family Getaway in Yosemite

A little while back, we realized that Lisa and the kiddos had one final week of summer fun left, while most kids were heading back to school. So, we decided to take the plunge and book a three-day, two-night trip to Yosemite. I hadn’t been there since I was a kid, and the kiddos were becoming quite the camping enthusiasts, so it felt like the perfect opportunity!

We chose to stay at the HOUSEKEEPING camp, not really knowing what to expect other than the fact that we wouldn’t need to haul our own tent. Upon arrival, we were pleasantly surprised. It turned out to be a canvas cabin with a solid wall and a canvas roof extending over a porch. Inside, there was a double bed and a bunk bed along with some decent storage and even ELECTRICITY (hello phone charging!).

We were fortunate to snag a spot right by the river. The kids immediately dashed down to skip rocks and take in the majestic mountains. You always hear about Yosemite’s beauty, but it really is breathtaking. The sheer power of nature hits you from every angle—it’s almost overwhelming, but in the best possible way.

Here are a few highlights from our trip:

  • JUNIOR RANGER CAMPFIRE: This was a fantastic way for the kids to learn about the park’s wildlife. There was a lot of talk about bears, which made my youngest a little anxious, but he found the idea of luring a bear with s’mores pretty amusing. Overall, it was a great lesson on what’s out there and the importance of conservation.
  • HIKING: We kicked off our first full day with a hike to Yosemite Falls. It was an easy trek with just a few small inclines, but arriving to a dry waterfall was a bit of a letdown. We then headed to Bridalveil Fall, where we spotted some water on our drive in. The kids loved this hike, as it was more challenging but led to a gorgeous waterfall and a rocky area to explore. There were a few warning signs about climbing, but hey, that’s part of the adventure, right?
  • BIKE RIDING: Our bike ride turned out to be a major highlight! We rented bikes at the Curry Village rental station. I got a tandem bike with my son, while Lisa and our youngest rode in a trailer. It took a moment to get used to, but we had a blast! The bike paths were easy to follow and took us all around the valley floor. We stopped for lunch at a picnic area near Degnan’s Deli, which has some awesome vegetarian options. After returning the bikes, we treated ourselves to ice cream at Curry Village.
  • SWIMMING: Following our bike adventure, we discovered a fantastic swimming spot by the river. The kids were having a ball! My son even climbed out to a log in the deeper water to show off his cannonball skills, while our youngest was happy just rolling around in the sand. The water was chilly but refreshing, and the views were stunning!

Of course, we also enjoyed making s’mores, spotting deer and squirrels, sharing spooky stories, and enjoying campfires. If you’re thinking about a trip to Yosemite with your little ones, I hope this gives you some helpful ideas.

All in all, it was a quick but exhausting trip, and we all fell head over heels for Yosemite. The scenery changes dramatically with the seasons, so we’re already planning a return visit to see it in a different light.
