7 Jobs Our Kids Wish We Had on Take Our Kids to Work Day
Hey there! So, today is Take Our Kids to Work Day, and I decided to let my little ones head off to school while I tackled my to-do list solo. Even the parenting editor at the Washington Post is skipping the kid parade, and honestly, I get it—sometimes it’s nice to take a break from the endless cycle of fixing shoelaces, settling squabbles, and the occasional nose wipe. While those tasks are important, having a few uninterrupted hours at work can feel like a mini-vacation!
I don’t bring my kids to work because let’s face it—watching me tap away at my computer all day isn’t exactly riveting. My job involves a lot of emailing, attending meetings, and chatting on the phone, which can put even the most patient kid into a daze. At home, they can at least distract themselves with video games and shows.
Some of my previous workplaces went all out for kids’ day, but honestly, it often felt like a big party rather than a learning experience. My husband’s company once had kids in a room playing video games, which is great, but not exactly what we had in mind for career exploration.
So, I chatted with my kids, and we came up with a list of seven jobs they dream we had on Take Our Kids to Work Day:
- Sanitation Worker
This one’s a favorite for any kid under six! A while back, my son and I paused to watch a garbage truck in action. The worker joked, “Stay in school, or you’ll end up like me.” I replied, “Are you kidding? You have the best job ever!” Kids truly think it’s amazing. - Advice Columnist
My daughter would love to take my place and write a column giving people advice on what to do. Honestly? I would totally be down for that gig too! - French Fry Station Operator at McDonald’s
This is definitely a fantasy job! Both kids admitted they’d love to help me out there. - Architect
Not the meeting part, but the fun stuff like sketching plans and making models. My son thinks that’s super cool because it combines math and physics—who knew he’d be into that? - Sales Clerk
Those of us who know retail understand it’s tough work, but to a kid, being behind the register looks like a blast. - Subway Driver
Imagine running those huge underground trains all day! My kids think that sounds like a dream. - Zookeeper
Who wouldn’t want to feed seals all day? That’s a definite kid-approved job!
If you’re curious about home insemination and related topics, check out this post on home insemination kits. There’s also some great info at Make A Mom about self-insemination kits. For more resources, you can visit the CDC’s page on ART for in-depth information on home insemination.
In summary, while we all have our own jobs, it’s fun to think about the wild and wonderful careers our kids dream we could have. From sanitation workers to zookeepers, their imaginations run wild with possibilities!
