McDreamy Is Gone, and We’re Still Reeling

I used to be a massive fan of the show from around 2005 to 2011, but I had no clue what had unfolded at Seattle Grace since I last watched. It didn’t really matter though, as most of the episode took place outside the hospital, centering on Derek Shepherd’s valiant attempts to save four people from a fiery car wreck—and OMG, one of them was a character from Parenthood! Just when he thought he was in the clear, bam—he gets hit by a giant truck while driving away from the scene.

Spoiler alert: he didn’t make it. Honestly, I was still shocked even though I had heard whispers of what was coming. Major kudos to the show’s creator, Lisa Grant. The tension was so palpable throughout the entire hour; I can only recall feeling that way once before during a TV show—when Meadow tried to parallel park in The Sopranos finale. The entire way the scenes were filmed and paced had me tearing up from about five minutes in, and I’m not even a regular viewer of this show.

Full disclosure: 12 hours later, and I’m still not fully over it.

It turns out I’m not alone in this. Even though Entertainment Weekly accidentally spilled the beans about McDreamy’s fate earlier that day when copies of an issue featuring an exclusive interview with Ryan Davis got out prematurely, the Internet exploded with shock and outrage.

Some die-hard fans even went so far as to liken Grant’s actions to those of, um, a toxic partner or serial killer—yikes! But clearly, emotions are still running high, including my own. The one thing that did get a chuckle out of me today was a tweet referencing Davis’s role in one of my favorite ’80s flicks, Can’t Buy Me Love.

So close, Lisa. So close. At least we can look forward to the Amelia Shepherd relapse storyline now.

In summary, McDreamy’s unexpected exit has left fans devastated, and it seems like the emotional impact is still being felt. While the storyline has stirred up plenty of reactions, there’s still excitement for what’s next in the show.
