An Open Letter to Bruce Jenner
Hey Bruce,
I don’t know you personally, and I wasn’t around to see your Olympic triumphs. I missed out on your film and racing adventures, and reality TV isn’t really my thing (sorry, but not really). However, after your interview with Diane Sawyer where you shared your truth about being a woman, I’m all ears now.
I can’t pretend to fully grasp your journey—we come from different places, especially since my own gender aligns with my biology. But here’s what we share: we’re both human beings seeking happiness. Sometimes that pursuit involves tough changes and challenges.
Speaking of transitions, my own father is a woman too. I learned about my father’s gender identity almost two decades ago during a family gathering. It was a shocker when she told me there was a woman inside her. Despite my initial confusion, I chose to support her, and over the years, I’ve walked alongside her as she embraced her true self.
Your journey reminds me a lot of hers (minus the Olympic fame and fortune, of course). I stand by her side, and I stand by you too.
People often ask if it’s strange to have a transgender parent. Honestly, it was a bit weird at first—I stumbled with pronouns and felt like I had lost my dad. I had my own transition to make. But I discovered that you can love and support someone while sorting through your own feelings.
These days, I don’t think about it much. Josephine—my father’s new name—is now living authentically and has found her happiness, which brings me joy.
When Josephine transitioned, there weren’t many role models outside of the transgender community. We had to navigate a lot on our own, without the high-profile examples that could’ve reassured us that everything would be okay.
Thankfully, times are changing, and you and your family are a huge part of that shift. My heart swelled when I saw your kids expressing pride in you. Their tweets of love made me emotional. They are proud of who you are, and so am I.
Even Kanye, who I’m not a fan of (I’m Team Beck, just saying), shared a moment where he emphasized how important it is to be true to oneself. If he can get it, then we all should, right? We each have our own paths, but we deserve support along the way.
So, despite our differences, I’m cheering you on as you embrace your authentic life. You’re in a unique position to spread a message of acceptance and foster understanding. The very spotlight that may complicate your journey could also be your greatest asset, allowing you to do tremendous good in the world.
I know your next steps will be under scrutiny, but with the love of your family and a new community backing you, I hope you walk this path with pride. You mentioned worrying about disappointing people—well, you haven’t disappointed me. You’ve inspired me, and I’m grateful. On behalf of myself and my family, thank you, and I’m here supporting you as you continue your journey to create change.
With warm regards,
Sarah, a fellow human
P.S. I can’t wait to use your new name when you’re ready!
