Don’t Stress! A Planned C-Section is Much Better Than an Emergency One

If you’ve experienced an emergency c-section, the thought of going through it again can be overwhelming. It’s completely understandable to feel anxious — an emergency c-section can be quite the ordeal. But if you’re in the midst of a follow-up pregnancy and constantly worrying about the possibility of another surgical birth, let me offer you some reassurance.

A scheduled c-section is a whole different ballgame compared to an emergency one.

During my first pregnancy, I was adamant about having a “natural” birth. I have to admit, I was heavily influenced by a certain documentary that painted surgical births in a pretty scary light. Scenes of crying women and frantic doctors had me thinking, “No way do I want to be one of those women in a hospital gown!” I envisioned myself as one of those serene moms giving birth in a cozy bathtub.

Then, during a routine prenatal visit, my baby’s heart rate dropped, and I was rushed to the hospital, where my son was born almost instantly. It was a whirlwind.

The Difference in Experience

One of the key differences between an emergency c-section and a scheduled one is the pace. With my first experience, everything was a frantic rush — doctors were sprinting to the operating room, and there was no time for small talk. The urgency to get the baby out made the whole process feel chaotic and even a bit rough.

The most challenging part of an emergency c-section is how it derails any birth plans you had in mind. It’s a shock to the system. Everyone will tell you that “the health of the baby is what matters most,” which is true, but you’re still allowed to feel a sense of loss over the experience.

After that traumatic first c-section, I was determined to try for a vaginal birth the second time around. However, my body had other plans, and at 42 weeks, I had to come to terms with the fact that a vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC) wasn’t going to happen. I felt a wave of panic wash over me as I headed to the hospital.

A Calmer Experience

But when I arrived, there was no chaos. The medical staff moved with ease, and I had the luxury of choosing the time for my surgery. My doctor, aware of my fears, helped prepare me for the calmer experience ahead. And she was spot on.

The surgery itself took longer than my first, but it was a relief. Without the urgency, the doctors could work at a more manageable pace, and there was even laughter and light conversation in the room. Sure, it was still major surgery, but the atmosphere was so much more relaxed, making it a completely different experience than my first birth.

After chatting with friends who have had repeat c-sections, many echoed my sentiments; their recoveries were generally easier as well.

Finding Support

If you’ve had an emergency c-section and are aiming for a different experience this time, find a doctor who supports your VBAC wishes. But if it turns out you need another surgical birth, remember that a scheduled c-section can be a far more peaceful experience.
