Four Reasons I Struggle to Play with My 4-Year-Old
Let me introduce you to my daughter, who, for the most part, is an absolute gem. With a bowl of cereal, a few cuddles, Netflix, and some bubble baths, she’s living her best life. She sleeps when I ask and has better manners than I do. Overall, I couldn’t be prouder. But then she pops the question: “Mama, can we play?” And suddenly, I feel like I’ve entered a nightmare.
I’m Completely Lost on the Characters.
Seriously, what is this? A fairy with dog wings? How does she walk in that ball gown with tiny feet? And what’s with this “Kid Doctor” needing 17 sparkly tools that are now stuck in my knees? Where are the Barbies? What happened to the Cabbage Patch Kids or Rainbow Brite? I can at least create fun scenarios with those! But instead, I find myself surrounded by a mountain of toys I barely recognize, thanks to my child’s whims while I scrolled through Facebook.
The Rules Are All Over the Place.
Wait, future Elsa can chat with present-day Elsa? Do wormholes exist in their world? And why can you lose a limb if I touch you with a lightsaber, but you’re totally fine if I run it along your whole body? I’m not convinced princesses discuss bathroom habits so openly, and why can’t I wear that bracelet without you panicking that it’s “broken”? I am utterly confused.
I’m Just Exhausted.
Mama woke up early, got ready, dropped you off, worked all day, ran errands, cooked dinner with whatever leftovers I could find, did the dishes, and snuck away for 11 minutes of peace. And now you want me to play? I’d rather pretend to be asleep until bedtime.
The Internet is Calling.
My parents had it easy—no distractions other than debating which video format to use. But here I am, with a smartphone in my pocket, linking me to a world of information and entertainment. Sorry, but wrestling that taffeta dress onto a headless doll isn’t my idea of fun when I could be diving into Pinterest for the latest smoothie recipe. Oh, I have a brilliant idea! Let’s play “Go See What Dad is Up To!”
In conclusion, while playing with my little one can be a challenge, I still cherish those moments, even if they come with some serious confusion and exhaustion.
