Parenting: A Throwback to Classic Video Games
You know, being a parent feels a lot like diving back into those retro video games from our childhood. Instead of seeing kids running around, I see little foes in my very own pixelated adventure. It’s like every day is a new level to conquer, and thanks to my joystick skills from back in the day, I’m pretty adept at navigating this parenting quest. Here are some classic games that totally prepped me for the challenges of parenthood:
Frogger
Making it from one side of the living room to the other without stepping on toys or tripping over shoes? Nailed it.
Donkey Kong
Climbing over heaps of scattered toys and dodging flying objects? Yep, that’s a typical day around here.
Space Invaders
Ever try hosting a kid’s birthday party? It’s like an endless swarm of tiny creatures coming at you, speeding up just as you start to tire!
Sonic the Hedgehog
A self-absorbed troublemaker thinks he knows it all, while you run around fixing the mess left behind? Sounds familiar, doesn’t it?
Pole Position
Securing the prime spot in the carpool line while racing to get to the next school? Eat my dust, other parents!
Q*Bert
The chaos of bedtime? Jumping, bouncing, and the occasional explosion of toys everywhere—it’s basically Q*Bert in real life.
Pac-Man
Your little ones end up following you around like those pesky ghosts, always demanding attention.
Ms. Pac-Man
Just a moment of peace to snack on something healthy? Good luck with that!
Tetris
Packing the diaper bag or the car for a family trip? It’s all about fitting everything perfectly, just like a game of Tetris.
Pitfall
When guests are on the way, it’s a mad scramble to clear away the toy jungles, dodge hazards, and pray no one trips over a blanket fort.
Pong
Life is a constant back-and-forth, dealing with whatever gets tossed your way (and trust me, things will get thrown!).
Kaboom!
When your not-quite-potty-trained toddler is zooming around without a pull-up, it’s a race to catch those “bombs”!
Contra
Navigating the treacherous waters of school politics is like a military mission, especially when head lice make an appearance.
Kid Icarus
Your child attempting to negotiate their way out of a timeout? Classic!
River Raid
Keeping your eyes on the prize while dodging obstacles and trying not to run out of energy? Yep, that’s parenting in a nutshell.
Super Mario Bros.
Searching for that elusive “princess” (or maybe just a moment of quiet) while collecting random coins (or snacks) along the way? Don’t let your partner find out!
Bubble Bobble
Bubbles and snacks are the key to happiness, at least in my house.
The Legend of Zelda
A quest filled with unfinished tasks, lost items, random treasures, and a bit of swordplay? Just another Saturday in suburbia.
