9 Reasons Why Marcia Brady Is an Awesome Role Model for My Daughter
My 7-year-old daughter has developed a serious obsession with The Brady Bunch. She’s binging the series in her own order, loving the way the kids age and then revert back to their younger selves. It’s hilarious how Hulu brings back those memories!
Watching it as an adult is quite different from when I was a kid. Back then, I thought Mike and Carol Brady were super strict parents. Growing up in a laid-back household, I saw them as way too controlling. But now, I realize they actually give their kids a lot of freedom to learn from their mistakes.
As we enjoy the show together, I see that Marcia is not just the pretty one who gets all the attention; she’s a fantastic role model for my daughter. Here’s why I think so:
1. She’s a Feminist
Marcia is determined to show that girls can do anything boys can do. When she crashes Greg’s Frontier Scouts meeting, she proves her worth by setting up tents and starting fires, all while smiling. In the end, she doesn’t even need a badge; she just wanted to prove herself!
2. She’s Compassionate
Remember when the kids jokingly nominate Molly Webber to host a big event? Marcia feels awful and helps Molly build her confidence, transforming her from a joke candidate to a serious contender. Plus, when she runs against Greg for class president, she shows grace and lets her compassion win over ambition.
3. She’s Responsible
When Carol and Mike can’t find a babysitter, Marcia and Greg show that they can handle things on their own. Their babysitting adventure goes so well that they even call the police on their parents trying to check in on them!
4. She Learns From Her Mistakes
Marcia isn’t afraid to admit when she’s wrong. After dumping sweet Charlie for the dreamy Doug, she learns a tough lesson when Doug bails on her. Once she realizes her mistake, she goes back to Charlie and apologizes. She also learns from her ego when she gets kicked out of a play, only to humbly step in when needed.
5. She Likes Unconventional Boys
Marcia’s romantic interests are anything but typical, showing that she values personality over popularity.
6. She Has a Sense of Humor
Marcia once tried to join every club at school to fit in, and we all remember what happened when Peter’s volcano project ruined her chance at popularity. She knows how to laugh at life and appreciates those who can too.
7. She Has Ethics
When Marcia develops a crush on her dentist, she chooses to respect his marriage instead of pursuing her own fantasies.
8. She Cares About Others
While all the kids try to help, it’s Marcia who takes charge to bring together Carol’s grandmother and Mike’s grandfather. After some initial hiccups, her perseverance pays off as they head to Vegas to elope!
9. She Meets Celebrities
Who wouldn’t want that for their daughter? Marcia has some memorable encounters, like the time she met Desi Arnaz, Jr. It’s a fun reminder that life can have its perks.
So, as we dive back into The Brady Bunch, I relish reliving my childhood with my daughter and hope she picks up some wisdom from Marcia along the way—even if she insists on being Cindy for Halloween!
