A Crew of Fifth Graders Steps Up for a Bullied Classmate and Teaches Us About True Friendship
So, picture this: a group of fifth-grade boys witnesses a classmate being bullied for having a learning disability, and instead of just standing by, they decide to take action. How awesome is that? This band of friends—Max, Liam, Noah, Ethan, and Oliver—noticed their peer, Alex, being teased on the playground and felt it was time to step in.
“Why would anyone pick on someone who’s different?” Max questions. Liam chimes in, “Yeah, it’s not fair to bully someone who has special needs!” They were referring to Alex, who had been the target of some pretty mean comments. “They were just taking advantage of him because it was easy,” Noah explains.
These boys banded together to support Alex. They invited him to join them for lunch and play with them during recess. Their teacher thinks the anti-bullying lessons they’ve had this year helped inspire their actions, but she believes the boys’ kindness has gone far beyond what she expected. Alex’s mom mentioned that he used to dread recess. “It was a struggle for him,” she said. “Now, he can’t wait to get outside to play with his new friends.” They even got a basketball hoop, and Alex has developed a love for the game.
When the boys discovered that Alex didn’t own a gaming console, they pooled their money to buy him one. They delivered it to his house, and his mom noticed how thrilled they all were. It was the first time Alex had friends over to hang out and play video games.
At the end of the school year, the boys were nominated for a Spirit of Youth award, but they say that’s not what matters to them. They opened their hearts and realized that Alex had a lot to offer too. Liam says, “Alex is an awesome kid to hang out with.” Alex, in turn, gushes, “These guys are the best friends anyone could ask for!”
We could all learn a thing or two from these kids. If you want to see their inspiring journey, check out the video—just a heads up, you might need some tissues!
