How Technology Has Changed the Way We Communicate with Our Kids
Before becoming a parent, I dove deep into every parenting guide I could find, soaking up all the tips and tricks. I mastered the art of swaddling, learned which baby food to introduce first, and even found the safest car seat on the market. Now, as a mom to a teenager, I realize that the key focus has shifted to how we guide our kids in the tech-savvy world they inhabit. The rules have totally transformed! Here’s a lighthearted look at how our conversations with kids have evolved since technology took over.
Then:
Don’t run with scissors!
Now:
Don’t run with my tablet!
Then:
Turn down that loud music!
Now:
Take out those earbuds!
Then:
Answer me when I call you from downstairs!
Now:
Answer me when I text you!
Then:
Watch where you’re walking!
Now:
Don’t click on that sketchy ad!
Then:
Make sure you look presentable for your class picture!
Now:
Don’t post those cringe-worthy selfies on Instagram. And definitely don’t share any of mom before her coffee!
Then:
Turn off the TV when you leave the room!
Now:
Unplug the charger when you’re done, and put it back where it belongs!
Then:
If you finish your dinner, you can play outside for a bit.
Now:
Go outside and have some fun!
Then:
No elbows on the kitchen table!
Now:
No phones at the table, please!
Then:
Be selective about your friends.
Now:
Can you “friend” me on your Facebook?
Then:
Look me in the eye when I’m talking to you!
Now:
Look at me when I’m talking to you!
And there you have it! I would share more, but I just got a text.
