Why I Supported My Daughter’s Bikini Choice

“Mom, can I get a bikini?” My 12-year-old daughter’s voice wavered slightly, revealing a mix of excitement and uncertainty.

As I glanced over the vibrant swimsuits hanging in the store, a whirlwind of colors and styles hit me. Some were too flashy, others too revealing for my taste. I wouldn’t have chosen any of those suits for myself back in the day—not even close.

Flashes of my own youth came rushing back. I remember sporting oversized T-shirts over my one-piece swimsuits, always worried that I was showing too much skin or giving off the wrong impression. I felt insecure about my body, convinced that I wasn’t perfect enough.

But my daughter is different. She carries no shame about her body; she sees it as strong, healthy, and beautiful. She’s growing, changing, and she embraces it all. She’s a confident swimmer who just wants to have fun in the water, and for her, a bikini is simply “cute and fun.”

The only time a swimsuit becomes an issue is if I treat it as one. My perspective on her choice will influence how she views it and herself. If I respond positively, it will build her confidence; if I criticize, it could leave lasting scars. I know this well.

At some point, someone will likely tell her that she should feel ashamed of her body or that she’s not beautiful enough. But today is not that day. And it definitely won’t be coming from me.

Looking back at her eager face, I smiled and said, “Of course! Let’s find a super fun one!”
