What I Did with 45 Hours of Me Time

Hey there! So, let me tell you about this unexpected 45-hour stretch of alone time I got recently. It was a total surprise. I was all set to drive my niece and her adorable baby to visit her dad, my brother-in-law, in Nashville. But, as life would have it, plans changed, and suddenly I was free! I quickly canceled the dog’s boarding and bath, my 8-year-old was already at her grandparents’, and I waved goodbye to my husband as he headed off on a business trip.

And just like that, it hit me: I was completely alone.

No one was around to call my name, ask me where their socks were, or wonder when dinner would be served. I could binge-watch any show without worrying about whether it involved aliens, John Wayne, or other war dramas. Plus, I could leave the TV blaring all night with infomercials while I lounged on clean sheets in the guest room, snacks ready on the pillow for midnight cravings.

I could whip up chocolate chip cookies loaded with walnuts since my daughter isn’t a fan of them, and I could toss in all the chocolate-covered caramel pieces I wanted because someone else is allergic. And guess what? I could devour every last cookie without sharing!

Dinner? Popcorn. Dessert? Cheesecake. I settled in for a marathon of NCIS with my laptop in my lap, wearing my comfy pajama pants and a tank top—no bra needed because who cares?

I daydreamed about indulging in chick flicks, sleeping until noon, and luxuriating in long bubble baths. It felt like the ultimate fantasy for a 52-year-old woman raising her granddaughter, caring for her elderly dad, and managing a husband who travels a lot.

Just imagine! Reading a whole chapter of a book without interruptions, no hunting for lost socks, no kids asking why about everything. I started plotting my time like a military operation, ready to embrace every moment while pretending to feel a twinge of guilt about enjoying my solitude.

Once I had the house to myself, I plopped down on the couch, opened my laptop, and turned on the Hallmark movies I had recorded. I thought I was ready for a cozy night in.

But after just four hours, I woke up with a dead laptop, a stiff neck, and no idea how I had dozed off. I couldn’t help but call my daughter, asking if she wanted to come home early because, let’s be real, we had cookies to bake and a spa day to plan together.

So, there you have it! Sometimes, a little alone time can turn into a dreamy retreat, but family is what makes it all worthwhile.
