Love Always Prevails: A Reflection on Equality
I couldn’t help but smile as I watched my 4-year-old daughter, Lily, confidently parade around the public pool, eagerly following her swim instructor and her best buddy, Max. Max is a spirited little guy who knows how to match her sass, yet he’s also incredibly sweet and usually gives in to her whims. Despite the typical preschool drama, there’s a genuine bond between them; they have their own secret language and act as each other’s safety nets in new situations. My partner, Sam, and I often joke about how we hope they’ll get married one day.
Later, I sat at a picnic table near the pool, my 2-year-old twin boys, Ethan and Noah, munching on snacks across from me, flanked by our close friends’ daughters, who I affectionately refer to as their “cousins.” We’ve chosen to define family not by blood but by the love shared with those around us.
After scanning the park and pool for any signs of trouble, I glanced at my phone, ostensibly to check the time. In reality, I was scrolling through social media, eager to catch up on the latest updates. As I flipped through notifications, I felt a familiar tension in my chest. I knew the Supreme Court was expected to announce its decision on gay marriage, and I was both anxious and hopeful.
Finally, I saw it: “Supreme Court Legalizes Gay Marriage Nationwide.” Tears of joy welled in my eyes as I read through the headlines lighting up my news feed. Friends from all walks of life—gay, straight, companies, and organizations—were celebrating, proudly displaying the rainbow flag that symbolizes love and diversity.
I looked up to see my boys devouring pretzel sticks and Lily floating in the pool, happily kicking her legs while being supported by her instructor. My wedding band, which has adorned my finger since 2001, reminded me of the journey my partner and I have taken. Living in Vermont, the first state to allow civil unions and one of the first to recognize gay marriage, we were fortunate to be legally married. Yet, many couples still faced barriers, unable to marry until this momentous ruling.
The Human Rights Campaign has long championed the hashtags #LoveCantWait and #LoveMustWin, reminding us that love doesn’t wait for laws to change. I’ve already experienced love’s triumph. There was no pause when I fell for Sam; we have built a life and a family together, navigating through legal complexities like civil unions and second-parent adoptions. Our love has fought and prevailed, as have countless other same-sex couples.
We have simply sought the same rights as our heterosexual friends and family. We’ve battled for equality while holding our breath in places where our relationships aren’t recognized, desperately wanting our roles as parents validated—regardless of biology. Love is relentless, love fights back, and love will always prevail against ignorance and fear.
With this landmark decision, love has triumphed, thanks in part to allies, friends, and open-minded strangers. Five out of nine judges affirmed that we all deserve “equal dignity in the eyes of the law.” With the gavel’s final strike, we were granted this right.
So, what’s next? There will still be protests and challenges ahead, but the urgency of our fight has lessened. Equality is inherently right. There will be weddings, celebrations, and families growing. The specifics of these changes remain unclear, but as I watch my children interact with their friends at the park, I feel a sense of hope.
I have no idea whom Lily or Max will marry someday, but knowing they can choose someone of the same gender is a huge relief. Kids today will grow up seeing marriage as an option for everyone, fostering acceptance, kindness, and happiness. Love will always win, as it was meant to be.

In summary, love knows no bounds and transcends the barriers that society may impose. The recent ruling on marriage equality is a victory for love, reminding us that acceptance and kindness will always follow in its wake.
