Summer Rules for Kids: Keeping the Balance
Hey there, fellow parents! Just because summer is here doesn’t mean the kids can run wild and do whatever they please. I get it; the school year can feel like a never-ending cycle of homework, tests, and structured schedules. But if you think that means you can toss out all the rules, think again.
You wouldn’t believe how many times my son, Jake, has popped into my room tonight, insisting he’s not tired because it’s summer break. “But Mom, I don’t have school!” he says, as if that’s a valid argument for staying up all night. I can almost see the wheels turning in his head, associating summer with total freedom and zero responsibilities.
Sure, summer means fewer hours in the classroom, but it doesn’t mean we’ve thrown the rulebook out the window. If only I could relax the rules like they want me to! But after one too many glitter explosions and creative “projects” that left my house looking like a craft store exploded, I’ve learned my lesson.
So, here’s a refresher note to my kids, and hey, feel free to use it as often as you like. I’ve already had to remind them about these rules countless times because, apparently, summer brings on a serious case of forgetfulness.
Dear kiddos,
It’s summer, not “I can do whatever I want” time. Here are some rules that still apply:
- No All-Day Snacking. Seriously, we just had breakfast, and you devoured an entire stack of pancakes! If you’re bored, go outside or find a book. The fridge isn’t your playground.
- Close the Door. This is a rule older than you are! If you go outside, remember to push the door closed behind you. If you leave it open, I might just take a chunk out of your future college fund to pay the electricity bill.
- Bedtime Still Exists. Just because school is out doesn’t mean you can skip sleep. Trust me, you turn into a mini-monster without it.
- No New “Rules” for Summer. Just because it’s sunny doesn’t mean you can walk across the table or sneak onto the computer without permission. Keep it in check, kids.
- Clean Up Your Messes. If you want to play with something, you better clean it up afterward. That glitter wasn’t going to clean itself, was it?
- Swimsuit Dress Code. I know they’re comfy, but wearing the same swimsuit for 20 days is just gross. Let’s keep things fresh, shall we?
- Pool Time Doesn’t Replace Bath Time. Just because you swam doesn’t mean you’re clean. A quick rinse is still necessary.
- Breaking Rules Has Consequences. Yes, even in summer. Consistency is key, kiddos.
These rules may seem strict, but they’re here because we love you. Now go outside and give me a moment of peace to ponder why these rules matter!
