Growing Older at the Local Pool
As I lounged by the pool today, I couldn’t help but reflect on how much time has flown since I first became a mom—over two decades ago, but who’s really counting? Our neighborhood pool seems to be a hotspot for little kids and their fresh-faced moms, who are often a bit less worn down than I am. Listening to their lively chats with their kiddos, I found myself wondering, “Did I really talk like that back in the day?” Here are my humorous observations on the evolution of motherly dialogue at the poolside:
Young Moms vs. Seasoned Moms
Young Moms: “Would you prefer lemon ice or strawberry ice, sweetheart?”
Seasoned Moms: “If you’re going to whine about lemon again, I’ll just eat that Italian ice myself.”
Young Moms: “Remember to use your walking feet!”
Seasoned Moms: “Quit running or the lifeguard will boot you out for the rest of the summer.”
Young Moms: “You can tell that boy you don’t want to share your shovel.”
Seasoned Moms: “Stop crying over a $1 toy, for crying out loud, or I’ll give you a reason to cry!”
Young Moms: “Make sure you use your words!”
Seasoned Moms: “Please, for the love of everything, stop talking!”
Young Moms: “Do you want me to join you in the pool?”
Seasoned Moms: “Did they fill this pool with ice cubes? Go play. I’m still trying to get through last week’s magazine.”
Young Moms: “I’m so glad I wore my bikini. It’s perfect for tanning.”
Seasoned Moms: “Thank goodness for the genius who came up with the super-Spandex tankini with a skirted bottom. Once I get that leg vein surgery, I’ll be good to go.”

In summary, sitting at the pool is not just a way to beat the heat but also a stroll down memory lane, showcasing the dramatic shift in parenting dialogue over the years.
