The Day I Missed My Chance to Meet Oprah
It was 2007, and my husband and I found ourselves in Chicago for a conference. While he was busy with meetings, I was having my own little adventure on the Miracle Mile, soaking in the sights and generally enjoying a day of freedom. And, of course, I was on a mission to find Oprah.
Once upon a time, I was Oprah’s biggest fan—like, no joke. I never missed an episode, and I made it a point to “Remember My Spirit” daily. My friends could attest to the fact that I often started conversations with, “You know, I saw on Oprah the other day…” Four o’clock was my sacred hour for tea, laundry folding, and soaking up wisdom from The Oprah Winfrey Show. I was practically a fangirl.
So, when I learned we’d be in Chicago, I immediately tried to snag tickets to a live taping. I sent countless emails, filled out forms, and even promised my firstborn to Stedman—all in vain. But I still held out hope that somehow, I would get to meet the woman who inspired me. I was determined!
Staying downtown, I frequently checked in with the concierge for any insider tips on getting into a taping. I even considered slipping him a hundred bucks, but that seemed a bit too risky with my husband around. The most he could do was put my name on a list for complimentary tickets, which he said occasionally came through. So for three days, I diligently added my name to The List.
On the fourth day, I spent the morning exploring the city and returned too late to add my name. It was a gut punch. I figured my connection with Oprah would still manifest somehow. After all, I had her latest Book Club pick in my bag, which I had been reading at a Starbucks in her city. The universe owed me, right?
The next morning, as my husband and I stepped into the elevator, we were joined by two overly enthusiastic women in their 40s. They were practically bouncing with excitement. I didn’t think much of it until one of them shrieked, “I can’t believe our hotel was chosen to see Oprah!”
Their ecstatic chatter continued, revealing that they had been lucky enough to get seats by putting their names on The List every day. Cue the tears. In that moment, I realized that one day of lax devotion to my Oprah obsession had cost me my chance to meet her.
To make matters worse, later that day, I ran into the two women again. They gushed about how PATRICK SWAYZE made a surprise appearance on the show! The show I should have been attending! I couldn’t believe it. Talk about bad luck.
At least it wasn’t the taping of Oprah’s Favorite Things, but still… PATRICK SWAYZE! I mean, come on! I consoled myself with the thought that someday, I would meet Oprah, and when that day comes, I promise I won’t act like an overexcited fangirl. But I can’t promise I won’t jump on a couch or two…
