When Your Baby Hits the Big 2-1
Ah, parenting. It’s a whirlwind of milestones that zip by faster than you can say “baby.” From those first heart-melting smiles to tentative steps, every moment feels monumental. You’re living in a world filled with baby giggles, sleepless nights, and a camera roll full of adorable snapshots. And then, just like that, kindergarten arrives, making each passing school year feel like a blur. Celebrations become a regular occurrence—trophies, cupcakes, and countless high-fives mark the journey as you navigate the ups and downs of parenthood together.
Middle school? Oh boy, that’s a whole different level. Those three years seem to stretch on forever. But when high school rolls around, you find yourself both relieved and terrified, as your little one faces new challenges. Suddenly, you blink, and there’s your baby, now a 21-year-old young adult.
Just recently, my own son celebrated this milestone, and I found myself gazing across the kitchen table at someone who feels both intimately familiar and like a stranger. This 21-year-old discusses politics, engages with his professors, and dives into the adult world of responsibilities like car insurance and credit cards. Sure, there are still some milestones down the road, but many of those will be celebrated without us. That’s how it’s meant to be, right? We nurture, guide, and then watch them take flight. With just a year of college left, it’s almost time to launch him fully into the world.
Yet, this birthday feels oddly unsettling. He’s changed so much, and I can’t help but wonder if he’ll turn to us when life gets tough. Will our quirky bits of wisdom stick with him, or did we overload him with too much information over the years? It’s hard to say.
At night, when sleep eludes me, I find myself replaying key moments of his childhood, critiquing my own performance as a parent. For those of you in the thick of parenting right now, let me share a secret: the challenging moments, the sleepless nights, and the tantrums? Those won’t be the memories that haunt you years down the line. Instead, you’ll find yourself mulling over the pivotal moments that shaped your child’s path. It’s these “what-ifs” that keep parents of young adults awake at night. Did I forget something crucial? Did we choose the right after-school activities? It’s a never-ending cycle of doubt.
Even though he’s grown, he’ll always be my baby. That scruffy facial hair is a clear sign that he’s moved into adulthood. It’s bittersweet to think that the little boy I held in my arms 21 years ago has transitioned into a man. It feels like a victory and yet somehow unfair. “Time flies!” they say, and wrapped in the nostalgia of those 21 years, it really does. But then, when I reflect on the challenges, from sleepless nights with a newborn to navigating school dramas, it feels like a huge achievement to get him here.
Now, my son is home for the summer, working full-time in his field before tackling his final year of college. We’re settling into a new normal, with a house full of adults and one teenager. I’m making a conscious effort to listen more, lecture less, and enjoy this new dynamic. And let me tell you, it’s pretty amazing to spend time with your adult child. Sure, I’d love to debate trivial things like which dinosaur would win in a fight, but I’m just happy to share a pint of beer with this young man.
So, here’s to all the kids growing up and the parents who’ve helped them on this incredible journey. It’s one heck of a ride.
