Fun Vacation Games for Your Hotel Room

So you’ve enjoyed a fantastic day at the beach, but the sun has set, and now it’s pouring outside. Or maybe you’re just too worn out to tackle another tourist destination. No worries—your vacation isn’t a flop! One of my favorite ways to unwind during trips is to dive into some card games in the hotel room. Card games are a perfect vacation companion because: 1) they let you kick back and rest those tired feet; 2) there’s no hassle of losing game pieces and discovering it later when you’re back home; and 3) they spark that fun (and sometimes feisty) competitive spirit! Next time you travel, make sure to bring these games along, and you’ll always have a go-to answer for the “What should we do now?” or “I’m bored!” questions. Plus, they’re compact, leaving plenty of space in your suitcase for souvenirs!

Five Crowns

This is my all-time favorite! The objective is to have the lowest score after 11 rounds. Players each start with three cards and “go out” when they manage to form a set of three matching cards or three consecutive cards of the same suit. Threes are wild in the first round, then fours in the next, and so on, until you reach the kings round. After someone goes out, add up the points for any leftover cards in your hand that aren’t part of a set. Just a heads up: you could be leading, and then one high-scoring hand could drop you right to the bottom!

Scrabble Slam

I adore the quick pace of this game! Begin by laying out the letters of any four-letter word. Players then take turns slamming down cards on any letter to create a new word—like changing ‘wine’ to ‘fine’. The first player to use all their cards wins. It’s simple, fast, and a blast!

Rat-a-Tat Cat

Each player places four cards face down and peeks at two. The aim is to finish with the lowest score (rats are high cards, and cats are low). On your turn, draw a card and decide whether to swap it with one of your cards or put it back. Some cards allow you to peek at your remaining cards, while others let you trade with opponents. When you think you have the lowest possible hand, shout “Rat-a-Tat Cat!” Then everyone adds up their scores. It’s a game of luck and strategy, with lots of laughs!

Uno

A classic that never goes out of style! It’s great for kids and adults alike. Match colors or numbers, but beware of those pesky cards that make you draw two or skip your turn. The first to get rid of all their cards wins, but remember to shout “Uno!” when you’re down to your last card!

Regular Deck of Cards

The options are endless! Play Go Fish, Rummy, Crazy Eights, or War. And let’s not forget the beloved childhood classic—52-pickup!

While it’s perfectly fine for kids to entertain themselves during your vacation, having these games on hand can be a lifesaver. Family trips can be pricey, but finding ways to keep everyone engaged is priceless.
