25 Concerns Moms Have About the First Day of Kindergarten

With my eldest about to embark on his kindergarten journey in just a few weeks, I’m feeling a mix of excitement and anxiety. Soon, he’ll hop onto a big yellow school bus filled with older kids, all while balancing new responsibilities and expectations on his tiny shoulders. While I’m looking forward to finally having some time for those long-overdue tasks (like organizing the pantry or maybe even catching a nap), I can’t shake off a few nagging worries about that big first day.

Sure, most parents might stress about whether their little ones will cry when it’s time to say goodbye. But I’ve got a whole different set of concerns. My energetic 5-year-old, who has a mind of his own, probably won’t shed any tears – but I might, thanks to these 25 worries:

  1. Is he going to think that eating glue is a fun snack?
  2. What if a mean kid tries to bully him for his juice box?
  3. Will he have a meltdown when he learns he can’t binge-watch cartoons after lunch?
  4. What if he accidentally swears in front of the class?
  5. He’s the slowest pooper ever! What happens when he needs to go during class?
  6. When another kid claims that eagles are cooler than lions, will my son insist otherwise at the top of his lungs?
  7. He has no shame about being naked. Yikes!
  8. Will he try to pee outside during recess?
  9. Is he going to correct the teacher like he does me, shouting, “Actually, that’s not right!”?
  10. Will he forget to use a tissue and wipe his nose on the teacher’s shirt?
  11. Is he going to tell his classmates that his dad has the smelliest farts ever?
  12. What if he only eats dessert and brings home a note suggesting healthier lunch options?
  13. Will he blurt out, “This is dumb!” if he doesn’t like an activity?
  14. Is gym class going to turn into a stage for him to yell, “Hey, check this out!”?
  15. Seriously, his bathroom breaks take ages. What will happen in school?
  16. What if he forgets which stop is his when getting off the bus?
  17. Will he share an embarrassing story about me, like how I laugh so hard I sometimes pee my pants?
  18. What if he’s the only one who doesn’t make a friend that day?
  19. Is he going to come home claiming he has 17 new girlfriends?
  20. Will he show off his new superhero underwear during Show and Tell, like he did with the mail carrier?
  21. Is he going to interrupt a lesson to demonstrate his ninja moves?
  22. Will he start a mini “Fight Club” at recess, convinced all the boys are ninjas?
  23. Am I going to receive a call from the principal?
  24. Will he use scissors and accidentally give another child a haircut?
  25. Is he going to be thrilled or upset when he realizes school is all day, every day?

I have a strong feeling that at least a few of these worries will come true. I’m preparing myself for anything! Who knows, maybe I can sweeten the deal with some chocolate and a little wine for the teacher if he turns out to be as much of a handful at school as he is at home. For now, I’m just trying to survive these last few days of summer.
