Reflecting on High School: What I Would Change

If I had the chance to relive my high school years, there are definitely a few things I would change up:

1. Embrace P.E. Class

Seriously, who wouldn’t want 50 minutes of daily exercise? With a trainer no less! I would dive into every sport offered, tossing aside any worries about how I looked. I’d tackle P.E. with the energy of an Olympic athlete. Bring on the gym, the track, and yes, even the weight room!

2. Focus on My Girlfriends

I’d spend less time chasing after boys and more time nurturing my friendships with the girls. Those moments are fleeting, and I’d appreciate the unique bond that comes from girl time. Boys can wait—friendship is where the real magic happens.

3. Appreciate the Teachers

Back then, they felt like the enemy, but now I realize they’re everyday heroes. They dedicate their lives to shaping futures, often for little pay. I’d be in the front row, soaking up knowledge and enjoying whatever quirky classes were offered, from clarinet to acting. Well, except for math—let’s skip that!

4. Own My Interests

I was too shy to admit that math and science weren’t my thing. Now, I’d confidently tell my geometry teacher that the only time I’d need to know about angles is when I’m assembling IKEA furniture at 3 a.m. I’d rather be chatting about literature with the librarian anyway.

5. Connect with Everyone

The outcasts, the artists, the quiet kids—I’d seek them out instead of ignoring them. Everyone has a story, and I’d want to hear theirs. Think of the amazing friendships I could have formed if I had just taken the time!

As my son starts his senior year, I wonder if he’ll have any regrets about his high school experience. But that’s okay—college is the perfect time for reinvention, as he says. If only I could go back to college, but honestly, it was great the first time—thank goodness for no cell phone cameras!

In summary, reflecting on high school brings a mix of nostalgia and lessons learned. If I could do it all again, I’d prioritize friendships, embrace my interests, and appreciate the people around me.
