He Still Calls Me Mommy

There are still bits of my little boy left, and I’m doing my best to appreciate them as everything changes. He’s grown so much, and the difference between this year and last is striking. Now he’s diving into electronics, and our conversations are deepening as he starts to explore the world around him and ask questions.

I know he’s maturing, so I’m holding tight to the little things. Like how he still hugs my waist when he really wants something, and how when he’s excited to share his latest Minecraft discoveries, he still calls me “Mommy.” He’s also still comfortable taking bubble baths with his little brother, even though he hops out much quicker these days.

At the store, he helped me pick out his school supplies like a pro, sticking to the list and avoiding the usual chaos—though he did sneak a nostalgic hide in a clothing rack. When I said no to a $79 backpack, he took it in stride and understood my reasoning.

He’s tall enough to reach the snacks in the pantry now, and he doesn’t forget his little brother when he grabs a treat. He likes to pick out his own clothes, although they often end up as a vibrant mix of superhero colors.

I watched him bury his head in my shoulder when I showed him a clip of Gertie screaming at E.T., even though he’d never want to admit he was scared. He still has his baby crib blanket, not as a constant companion, but he knows where to find it when he’s tired or watching a movie.

He giggles when the clippers buzz around his neck at the barber’s and makes a beeline for the lollipop afterward. Not to mention, I caught him dozing off on my shoulder while we watched Golden Girls—don’t tell him I mentioned that!

He once had a fear of water that made swimming lessons a challenge, but this summer, he dove right in to retrieve diving sticks. Bath time has become a breeze; he doesn’t mind getting his hair washed anymore. He even used to be terrified of moths and mosquito hawks on the porch, but now he’s trying to catch them!

With the new school year starting, I know more changes are coming. It’s my job to prepare him for the world, to help him conquer his fears, and to stand on his own. He’ll leave the nest one day, and I’m determined to equip him with the important lessons of life. But for now, he still calls me Mommy, and I’m cherishing every moment of it.
