Hey there, Parent of a High School Senior!
I just want to start by saying that I’m not a parent of a high school senior myself—I’m navigating the joys of parenting a lively 6-year-old and a curious 1-year-old. My son is actually about to begin kindergarten, marking the start of his educational journey just as your child is wrapping up theirs. But for the past 15 years, I’ve had the pleasure of teaching high school seniors, so I hope you’ll indulge me as I share some thoughts.
The College Essay Journey
Each year, I watch seniors as they tackle those daunting college essays. I always encourage them to let you read their drafts. After all, you know them better than anyone, even if they sometimes think otherwise! You understand their unique qualities and what makes them stand out from the crowd.
Support During Application Season
As the November application deadlines loom, I see the panic set in. I’ve heard stories of you treating them to ice cream to ease their stress or gifting them cozy hoodies from their dream schools. It’s heartwarming to witness your support during this whirlwind time.
Future Plans and Pride
I also hear about their plans for the future—whether it’s college, the military, work, or travel—and it’s clear how much pride they have for you, even if they don’t always express it. I’ve seen them break down under the weight of expectations, but I also know you’re there to comfort them, reminding them that it’s okay to lean on you when they need it.
Dealing with Senioritis
When senioritis strikes around March, I hear from you about keeping them motivated, and I do my best to help them stay on track, even if they might not appreciate it at the moment. Eventually, they’ll come around and thank you for everything you’ve done for them, just as they might one day thank me.
A Bittersweet Reminder
Every year, I connect with parents who are overcome with emotion at the thought of sending their child into the world, and I can’t help but think of my own little ones growing up too. It’s a bittersweet reminder that these moments pass quickly.
Heartfelt Gratitude
So, as we embark on this final year of your child’s high school experience, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude. Thank you for raising these amazing young people and for trusting me with their education during this pivotal year. Your parenting has taught me so much about nurturing and guiding children.
Here for You
As you dive into this year, know that I’m here for you. I can handle the stress, the tears, and the occasional bout of senioritis. I keep a stash of tissues and chocolate handy because I’ve learned that they can solve most problems, or at least make them feel a bit better. I appreciate that you’re just a call or email away, and I promise to reach out if needed.
You’re Not Alone
Parenting a high school senior can feel overwhelming, but you’re not alone in this journey. Enjoy this year with your child, and remember that I see the little ones in them, too. We’re all in this together—teaching and parenting are a beautiful dance, and I feel fortunate to be part of your child’s journey.
Take care,
A Grateful 12th Grade English Teacher
