14 Thoughts Every Mom Has During Her Son’s First Football Game

When your little boy takes to the football field for the first time, it’s an emotional rollercoaster for any mom. You’re bursting with pride but also anxious that he might get flattened. Plus, you find yourself in a new social circle of sports moms, where you have to figure out all the unspoken rules. After watching my son’s first game, I can honestly say that being a football mom is a whirlwind of feelings. I found myself watching every play intently, but my mind was racing with thoughts. If you’ve been there, you’ll know exactly what I mean.

  1. Did I bleach his pants enough? They look kind of dull next to his teammates. Should I have bought a backup pair? Are the other moms doing that? Ugh, just great.
  2. Focus, buddy! If you don’t pay attention, you’re going to get clobbered, and I won’t be the one to comfort you. Why is it so hot out here?
  3. Wait, that kid just tackled mine! Seriously? Is he even the right age for this league? Somebody hold my phone; I’m about to show him how it feels!
  4. Run! Go! Touchdown! Oh no, stop! Wrong way! That’s not your end zone! Ugh.
  5. Can I count this as exercise on my MyFitnessPal? All this jumping and running down the sidelines, plus carrying snacks, has to burn more calories than a gym session.
  6. It’s scorching out today. Did the coach remember to spray them with sunscreen? My poor kid is going to fry. Maybe I can sneak some on him when he’s on the bench.
  7. Check out that throw! We might have a future star on our hands. Just think, junior high, high school championships, maybe even scholarships! Better start networking with colleges now. Do scouts watch them from the very start?
  8. Get him! Don’t let that kid through! Your dad taught you better than that! I taught you to play tough! Body slam him like you do with your brother! And, wow, it is hot.
  9. Am I the only mom in shorts and a T-shirt? Did I miss the memo about wearing cute team colors? Now I look like the uncommitted parent.
  10. Why does football season start when it’s still sweltering? Thank goodness fall is just around the corner… I hope!
  11. Phew! Thank goodness the ref didn’t see my son jump before the snap. Maybe he’s a secret fan.
  12. That call was absurd! Totally biased. Did the other team bribe the ref? I swear I saw one of their moms flirting with him earlier.
  13. Come on, kid, focus! Stop watching the cheerleaders! If you don’t pay attention, you’ll never get back in the game.
  14. Oh wow, look at that mom over there losing it! Just remember, they’re just kids, not NFL stars yet.
