5 Ways We’ve Become Different Parents Than We Expected
Being the “perfect parent” seems simple until you actually dive into parenthood. You have all the answers and a solid plan—until your little one throws an epic tantrum in the middle of the grocery store. Suddenly, all those judgmental thoughts from before kids come rushing back, and you realize that your child is totally capable of everything you swore they wouldn’t do. Oops! It’s a humbling experience that nearly every parent goes through.
As we navigate the wild ride of parenting, our reality often strays far from the idealized version we envisioned. Here are a few ways we’ve found ourselves changing:
1. Screen Time
- Before Kids: We thought screen time would be strictly limited to the pediatrician-recommended amount. Our kids would be so engaged in hands-on activities and storytelling that screens wouldn’t even cross their minds!
- After Kids: Well, let’s just say that screen time has become our best friend when we need to get things done—like preparing meals, tackling laundry, or even enjoying a peaceful moment in the bathroom. And let’s not forget those times in waiting rooms or during long car rides.
2. Food Choices
- Before Kids: Our little darlings would only eat wholesome, organic foods. We’d whip up our own baby food from fresh veggies and fruits and create beautifully arranged, nutritionally balanced lunches.
- After Kids: Sure, they might have picked the veggies off their burger, but hey, pickles count, right? And mashed potatoes and cake for dinner? It’s all part of the parenting gig!
3. Behavior Expectations
- Before Kids: We envisioned our kids having impeccable manners—always saying please and thank you, riding calmly in shopping carts, and never throwing a fit in public.
- After Kids: We’re pretty sure they’re just being a little extra because they missed their nap today. Totally normal, right?
4. TV Consumption
- Before Kids: We promised ourselves that our children would only watch high-quality educational shows, avoiding any mindless cartoons that would harm their developing brains.
- After Kids: Another episode of that ridiculous cartoon? Sure, why not. Whatever keeps the peace!
5. Grooming Standards
- Before Kids: We planned to dress our kids in stylish, coordinated outfits, free from any character t-shirts or mismatched socks. They would always look immaculate.
- After Kids: A quick thumb lick to wipe the smudges away? Good enough! And that superhero costume? Rock on!
The journey through parenthood is often paved with good intentions, but reality can throw those plans out the window. Ultimately, none of us become the parents we thought we would be, and that’s perfectly okay. Our children won’t remember whether they had gourmet baby food or the “right” amount of screen time; they’ll just remember the love and laughter shared along the way.
