10 Types of People You Encounter at PTA Meetings
Fall is upon us. The leaves are changing, pumpkin spice is everywhere, and the moms at my kids’ elementary school are gearing up for their first round of PTA fundraisers. On a quiet Thursday evening, I head to the school library for a PTA meeting, where I know I’ll be asked to volunteer for various tasks. As I settle in and glance around, I can’t help but feel like I’ve just landed on another planet, spotting these 10 characters who are always present at these gatherings.
- The Craft Queen
This is the mom who has a Pinterest solution for every issue. Her ideas for bake sales and raffles usually involve glitter, glue guns, and trips to the craft store. - The Caffeine Addict
With jittery hands and a wide, toothy smile, this mom has been fueled by coffee all day. She’s either ready to tackle a fundraiser single-handedly or about to crash. - The Ex-Teacher Know-It-All
This one can be a bit of a pain. She’s convinced she knows better than everyone else. Unless you’re a bit of a slacker, in which case, she might just do your work for you. - The Veteran Officer
This mom has been around the block a few times and knows all the ins and outs. She’ll guide you through navigating the school’s bureaucracy and share wisdom about which teachers are the most helpful. - The Procrastinator
She’ll show up to maybe half the meetings and contribute store-bought snacks that don’t quite fit the bill. Signed up for cupcakes, she’ll bring a pack of cookies instead. - The Naysayer
Ready to shoot down any and every idea, this mom is a real joy-sucker. You’ll want to avoid sitting next to her or joining her committee at all costs. - The Enthusiastic Cheerleader
Possibly the most entertaining (and sometimes annoying), this mom adores the school and its students. Her energy is infectious, making events lively and fun. - The Business Maven
While she’s a pro in her field, she tends to misinterpret the spirit of volunteering. Every meeting becomes a lecture on how the PTA could function better if only everyone followed her business advice. - The Sycophant
You can spot her easily as she showers compliments on the committee leaders and popular teachers. She has little interest in mingling with anyone else—definitely not the friendliest of folks. - The Quitter
There’s always one. The PTA kicks off with enthusiasm, but the Quitter will sign up and then disappear, leaving the rest of us to pick up the slack.
They’re right when they say it takes a village. If you’re fortunate enough to join the PTA—or any group aimed at supporting our children—you’ll likely meet these 10 lively characters. If you’re honest, you might even find a bit of yourself in one of them. For more insights into parenting, check out our article on creating a home insemination kit.
