Mom Thoughts Before Falling Asleep

You know, I’m definitely the type who thinks and plans ahead. So when evening prep feels like a Herculean task, it really rubs against my nature. After a long day, all I want is to switch to autopilot, kick back, and give my overactive brain a break.

But as I snuggle into bed, a whirlwind of mom thoughts starts to swirl around my head:

  • What’s on the agenda for tomorrow?
  • What time should I set my alarm so I can hit snooze a few times?
  • Oh no, I totally forgot to remind Sam about that last homework sheet. Maybe he can tackle it before the bus arrives—yeah right!
  • Are we supposed to return library books tomorrow? Do I have any repairs pending?
  • What’s in the fridge for their lunches?
  • Oh, it’s spirit color day at school! I think his shirt is hiding in the laundry basket by the dryer. I’ll just give it a quick spin in the dryer when I get up.
  • And what about that event in two nights? Yikes, no one’s lined up to watch the kids yet. How essential is it?
  • I need to bring a dish to the gathering this weekend. Do I have enough to whip something up, or am I making a grocery run?
  • I stayed up way too late again. Fingers crossed the little one doesn’t wake up at 4 a.m. and decide to join us!
  • I wonder if I’ll ever hear back from that email I sent.
  • How much should we donate to the PTO? I’m really grateful they give us this option instead of those endless fundraisers.
  • The living room looks like a tornado hit it.
  • Did I reserve that venue for Sam’s birthday party in time? He’s really excited about it.
  • Oh gosh, he’s gonna grow up and write about how disappointing his 8th birthday was.
  • But hey, the boys had such a sweet time tonight! They were adorable, sprawled out surrounded by toys and snack bowls.
  • Did I ever return that big soup bowl to Lucy from church? What did I even do with it?
  • The apples in the fridge are starting to go bad. I should make an apple crisp or something.
  • You know, I should probably do something nice for someone tomorrow. I have a little box in the laundry room, maybe I could turn it into a care package.
  • Did I remember to cancel that subscription for dishwasher tabs? We’ve got way too many now. I did the same thing with diapers once.
  • We should totally run over the Diaper Genie with the truck to celebrate potty training success. I can’t stand that thing!
  • We need to get rid of that pedal car in the garage too. The kids never play with it anyway. What else can I toss?
  • I hope my relatives in Kansas are doing well tonight, and I hope our sponsored child, Rohan, has what he needs and is drifting off to sleep. Is he even sleeping in a bed?
  • Thank you, Lord, for all our blessings and this chaotic, beautiful life. Please keep an eye on our family in Oklahoma—there are storms headed that way. And can you also… zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

So, if you find yourself swirling in thoughts like these before bedtime, just know you’re not alone! It’s a wild ride being a mom, but we wouldn’t trade it for anything.
