6 Things I Wish I’d Known About Having a C-Section
When I welcomed my first child through a C-section at 35 weeks due to placenta previa, I had an inkling that this might be the route for me. Yet, I was in such denial that I never really took the time to ask about recovery or what to expect afterward. I thought a C-section would be a breeze compared to the whole pushing-a-baby-out scenario.
So, there I was, sitting in the OB’s office, and suddenly it hit me: I was about to have surgery and would be holding my baby before happy hour. Panic set in, and I realized I was totally unprepared for what lay ahead. I imagined the procedure would be straightforward, like taking a nap and waking up with my baby in hand, looking all glam like Rachel from Friends. But reality check—this is major surgery. My husband even saw my intestines! That should earn me a solo dinner night when the kiddos are older, right?
If you think a C-section might be in your future, let my lessons learned save you some stress. Here’s what I discovered:
- Freezing Cold OR: The operating room is colder than a winter wonderland, and the stuff they pump into your IV doesn’t help. I was shaking so much during my first C-section that I worried the anesthesiologist might miss the mark with the spinal block, leaving me paralyzed. My body was shimmying like it was auditioning for a dance-off!
- You Will Feel Some Stuff: You might think you’ll be blissfully numb, but that’s not entirely true. While you won’t feel pain, the sensation of being pulled and tugged as they extract your baby is not what I’d call “slight pressure.” My OB’s warning was an understatement of epic proportions.
- Pain Meds Are Your Friend: Initially, I was all in on the strong painkillers. But after 28 hours, I thought I could skip them—big mistake! Not only was I dealing with post-surgery pain, but also cramps from my uterus contracting since my baby was no longer in there. Trust me, you want to stay ahead of the pain. I prefer to be miles ahead!
- Laughing Is Out: If you think you’ll be your usual self, think again. Laughing, sneezing, and even coughing will become a challenge. They say to hold a pillow over your incision, which helps a bit, but sneezes turn into these tiny, dainty eruptions that would make any Disney princess proud. I once laughed so hard my husband joked the nurses were going to send me to a mental hospital!
- Constipation Strikes Back: Oh, the joys of postpartum plumbing! After my first C-section, I went a staggering seven days without a single visit to the bathroom. I tried all the fiber I could find, but it was like my body was on strike. After fifty long minutes of trying, it felt like my insides were playing hide and seek. Stock up on good old prune juice; you’ll thank me later!
- Numbness Forever: The area around your scar? Don’t expect any feelings to come back. Four years later, the skin around my incision still has limited sensation. It gets itchy at times, and I find myself scratching like I’m trying to dig a treasure out of my belly!
Despite all of this, I chose to have a second baby via C-section. Knowing what to expect really helped ease my nerves. And, yes, I made sure to pack extra prune juice!
