Today, I Rocked a Swimsuit
Would anyone notice the stretch marks swirling across my thighs? Those pale lines, some tiny, some more prominent, tell the story of my body’s transformation over the years—from a high school athlete to a mom who sporadically hits the gym. And what about the cellulite that cozies up between my thighs, waiting to escape the confines of my bikini bottom?
Would they see my less-than-perfect tummy? Sure, my upper abs are a little toned, but they come with a C-section scar and some muscle repair. Would they judge the not-quite-flabby, but definitely not chiseled body of a mother who brought life into the world through surgery? Would they look down on those features?
What about my sun-kissed, but still pale skin? The dry, freckled areas that haven’t seen the sun in ages might raise some eyebrows. Would my friends type out comments about sunscreen and the need for cover-ups?
And the tattoos—seven in total—might spark some criticism. Some might see them as signs of poor judgment or lack of moral values in a mother.
But what about the woman I see when I glance in the mirror? The mom of two who used to sprint six-minute miles and crank out crunches with ease? Or the strong, fierce mama bear ready to protect her family? Would they see a confident woman who embraces her skin—scars, stretch marks, and all?
What would my friends notice? Today, I wore a bikini to the beach and shared a picture on social media. No one mentioned the stretch marks or the cellulite. No one commented on my tattoos or the sunburn. Instead, they saw the joy on my kids’ faces, the happiness radiating from our family photos, and the fun we were having in the sunshine. That’s what makes me proud—proud of my family and, most importantly, proud of my body. It has carried me through nearly 30 years of sports, battles, and sleepless nights. It’s weathered births and surgeries. I may not be a tiger, but every stripe and stretch mark tells a story, and that is incredibly beautiful.
