To the Teenage Girls at the Pool
Hey there, amazing teens! Before you roll your eyes at yet another “letter,” let me assure you, this isn’t one of those lectures from a well-meaning adult trying to tell you how to dress or behave. I get it; you’ve heard it all before. This is just a friendly chat about something that happened recently that made me think of you.
Last week, I found myself at the local swimming pool, where I met (well, sort of) a couple of you girls. I climbed up to the high dive after making a deal with my son, Leo. He said, “You jump off the high dive, Mom, and I’ll do my epic cannonball.” Easy enough, right? But when I looked down, the reality hit me hard—the high dive is way higher than I remembered! I suddenly felt like a kid again, grappling with the same fears you probably face.
I watched as you stood on the board, hesitating before jumping. One of you said, “It usually takes me a few tries before I go,” and I totally understood. I could see the nerves and excitement on your faces, the way you cheered each other on. It reminded me of my own struggles. I stood at the edge of the board, trying to gather my courage, while you both patiently encouraged me with words of wisdom like, “Just don’t look down!” and “It feels like flying!”
Even with the pep talks from you two, I still hesitated. I kept backing off, feeling like I was letting you down. But then, one of you looked me in the eye and said, “You’ll regret it if you don’t jump.” And you know what? You were right. So, on my next chance, I took a deep breath, looked out at the trees (not down!), and jumped! The rush was exhilarating, and I heard your cheers as I hit the water.
A few moments later, as you walked past me, I shouted out my thanks, but you were too caught up in your own giggles to hear. I smiled, knowing that I had just learned something valuable from you both.
In today’s world, there’s so much talk about teenage girls and the challenges you face. From clothing choices to social media, it can feel overwhelming. Parents, like myself, try to guide you through life’s ups and downs, but what we often overlook is how much we can learn from you. Your bravery, your resilience, and your ability to embrace the moment are lessons we can all benefit from. You remind us that it’s okay to be scared, but it’s also important to take that leap and jump into the deep end, both literally and figuratively.
So keep being your awesome selves! Keep challenging the norms and pushing boundaries. And remember, we’re all in this together, learning and growing side by side. In summary, we adults may have some experiences under our belts, but you, the youth, offer a fresh perspective that’s invaluable. Let’s keep jumping into new experiences and supporting one another along the way!
