The 10 Principles of Costco Parenting
I spend a significant amount of time at Costco. It’s my go-to place for about 90% of my grocery needs. I can grab a giant ice cream for my kids at an unbeatable price, and their pizzas are tasty, affordable, and ready to go by the time I’m finished shopping. I just love it there!
However, the shopping experience can be a bit frustrating due to the behaviors of some fellow shoppers who seem to lack basic courtesy and common sense. To help out the good folks amidst the chaos, I’ve put together a list of guidelines for those who might need a little nudge in the right direction. Here are the 10 Principles of Costco:
- Have your membership card ready as you approach the entrance.
- If you don’t have your card on hand, please step aside and get out of everyone’s way.
- In the refrigerated section, don’t leave your cart blocking the entrance; it’s just rude.
- When you’re at the sample station, be mindful of others. If you see a mom with two little ones and only a few samples left, consider letting the kids have them first—especially if it’s something delightful like the torta rolls.
- If you spot a mom with kids shopping on a weekend, give her a smile. She’s juggling a lot!
- If you’re the person checking receipts at the exit and there are multiple kids in a cart, please don’t just give one smiley face on the receipt. Hand out separate ones to each child. It makes their day!
- As you walk back to your car, don’t stroll right down the middle of the parking lot. Move to the side, please!
- Always return your shopping carts to their designated spots.
- When leaving the parking lot, allow someone who’s been waiting to back out of their spot.
- If someone lets you out after a long wait, don’t forget to smile, wave, and say thank you. A little kindness goes a long way!
If everyone follows these principles, we can create a more pleasant shopping environment. Those who don’t? Well, they might just find themselves in the infamous Costco parking lot purgatory.
