My Own Personal Escape: HGTV by Rachel Levy Lesser
I have to confess, I’ve never really been into adult films—honestly! I’ve never splurged on those exclusive channels, even during a hotel stay, and my internet browsing history is as wholesome as they come. Why pay for something outdated when you can enjoy a fresh and totally family-friendly alternative for free?
Just flip to channel 665 (HGTV in HD on my TV), and you’ll see what I mean. It’s a captivating realm filled with stunning soapstone island countertops, sleek subway tile backsplashes, eclectic pegged board floors in inviting entryways, and custom shoe shelves tucked into walk-in closets that look more fabulous than the kitchens on Cousins on Call. Seriously, don’t even get me started on those closets. I could rave about them forever.
I find myself losing track of time late into the night, hanging on every moment as I watch whether the charming family of three (soon to be four!) will choose to Love It or List It. I’m usually rooting for them to love it. How can you not swoon over the transformation of a dank basement into a stylish game room, home office, guest room, and a full bathroom? It’s just mind-blowing!
I’m also head over heels for the Property Brothers’ incredible makeover of a 1970s Cape Cod fixer-upper into the perfect home for a bright-eyed couple wanting to be close to the city while still having room for their pups, a yoga studio, and a music room. All of that on a budget that, honestly, might barely cover a new HVAC system for me! Not to mention how quickly they pull it all together—let’s just say it took me longer to clean out my garage last spring.
While I might not always agree with every choice made by my favorite HGTV stars, I’m still completely enamored with their creations. A media room, three-car garages, and custom fire pits might not be my thing, but I totally respect that they bring joy to others.
I know I’m not alone in this obsession. A recent girls’ night out with my college friends led to a lengthy chat about our latest late-night viewing habits. Some of them even introduced me to new favorites like Rehab Addict and Fixer Upper. Seriously, you have to see what the Addict does to a fireplace; it should be illegal!
I’m aware there are more productive ways to spend my time, but there are also worse things, right? So for now, I’ll keep watching with delight until House Hunters finds that ideal bungalow near the water and the park, all while staying way under budget, of course. Sounds good to me!
