When Your Child Embarrasses You on Their First Day of School

Today marked my oldest kid’s first day of 2nd grade, and let me tell you, I was up bright and early at 5:30 a.m., an hour ahead of my alarm, too excited to sleep—like it was Christmas morning!

I made sure to whip up some pancakes from that instant mix you just add water to and shake. I even put on a bra, just in case the neighbors caught a glimpse of my pancake-making skills. I laid out Liam’s navy uniform shorts, trying to ignore the lint that had mysteriously attached itself (note to self: washing new towels with old clothes = bad idea) and double-knotted his sneakers with care.

We did miss the bus, but I assured him there was still time to hit up the carpool line. I rounded up our other sleepy kiddos and stuffed them into the van. (Liam has recently declared he wants to be an “asteroidal physicist,” which had me Googling the term before my coffee kicked in—talk about a morning brain workout!)

As we sat waiting in the long line of cars at the elementary school, I tried to create that special mother-son moment. You know, the kind where you lock eyes and share a heartwarming connection, only to end up yelling “DON’T EAT THE TOOTHPASTE OUT OF THE SINK!” moments later? Yeah, that kind of special.

I turned around in my seat, fighting back tears. “Liam, I’m so proud of you! I hope your day is amazing. Your siblings are really going to miss you too—”

And that’s when the teacher on carpool duty opened our van door and Liam shouted, “BYE, SUCKERS!!!” at the top of his lungs as he jumped out. The teacher just stood there, shocked. I smiled and shouted back, “HAVE A GREAT DAY!” like this was our family’s normal goodbye ritual. Her expression didn’t change as she closed the door.

You know what? I think next time I drop the kids off, I’ll just roll down the window of our old van and yell, “BYE, SUCKERS!!!” as I drive away. Because that’s just how we roll, SUCKERS.

In summary, the first day of school can be filled with unexpected moments and laughter, especially when your child decides to make a memorable exit. Embrace the chaos, and don’t forget to cherish those special moments, even when they come with a side of embarrassment.
