5 Things I’d Do Differently If I Could Go Back to High School

If I had the opportunity to relive my high school days, I would definitely take a different approach to a few things. Here’s what I’d change:

  1. Embrace P.E. Class: Can you believe we had fifty minutes of daily exercise? With a teacher to guide us? I’d dive headfirst into every sport available, leaving behind any insecurities about my body. I’d tackle gym class with the enthusiasm of an athlete at the starting line of a marathon. Bring on the sweat!
  2. Prioritize Friendships with My Girlfriends: During my teenage years, I was too wrapped up in the drama of dating. Looking back, I realize the importance of my friendships with other girls. Those precious bonding moments with my gal pals are something I’d cherish even more. Boys? They can wait. Friendship is priceless.
  3. Appreciate My Teachers: Back then, teachers felt like strict authority figures. Now, I understand the passion they have for shaping young minds despite the low pay and lack of respect. I’d sit in class, soaking up every lesson, whether it’s free clarinet lessons or engaging discussions about literature with the English department. Well, except for math. That’s a no-go for me!
  4. Find My Own Path Without Apologies: I came to realize that math and science were not my strengths, but I was too shy to admit it. I wish I could go back and confidently tell my geometry teacher that the only time I’d need those formulas would be in 15 years while assembling a toy at 3 a.m. Instead, I’d want to chat with the librarian about the latest novels.
  5. Connect with Everyone: I would make an effort to engage with all the different cliques—the geeks, the goth kids, the drama enthusiasts. I’d be curious about their lives, their music, and their talents. The unique friendships formed outside of my comfort zone could have enriched my high school experience.

As my oldest child gears up for his senior year, I wonder if he’ll leave high school with regrets or thoughts of what could have been. But I’m okay with that. College is just around the corner, a perfect opportunity for reinvention. If I could go back to college? Honestly, I wouldn’t change a thing (thank goodness for no cell phone cameras)!
