How I’m Learning to Understand My Teenager

We keep introducing them to the world, and in return, they reflect it back to us. Look closely; can you see what has become so familiar that it’s easy to overlook?

Oh, we see it all right. We recognize that while we parents are accustomed to leading the way, our teenagers are on a quest to carve out their own paths. They are the protagonists in their own narratives, just beginning to understand what that truly entails.

This doesn’t mean they no longer need us. Every hero requires mentors. They seek guidance and wisdom. They need someone to teach them the ropes—like how to wield a light saber. They need assistance in recognizing their own potential and someone to point them towards their future. After all, they’re just setting out on their journey, and we have the unique opportunity to help them launch their own stories.

Being a hero is no easy feat. We all know that. It’s challenging, it tests their limits, and sometimes when the going gets tough, they may lash out. They might make unwise decisions or take their frustrations out on those who love them, fully aware that we’ll be there waiting for them on the other side.

Heroes stumble and fall, but they always rise again and keep moving forward. It’s our role to remind them of their strength and resilience.

What a privilege it is to witness this journey! It’s an honor to walk beside them, cheering them on, and lifting them up when they trip. It’s incredible to share our lives with these once tiny bundles that used to fit in our arms and now borrow our shoes more often than not, reminding them, “I know the way, and I’ll show you. But I have faith that you’ll find your own path, too.”

None of us are truly prepared for this adventure, but that’s part of the beauty of it.
