An Open Letter to the Speedster Racing Down My Street
Hey there, friend,
First and foremost, can we all agree that it’s time to SLOW DOWN? I wish I could yell this at you, but I’m standing in front of my house, on the sidewalk, with my two little ones. I’d rather not let them hear me get riled up, even though they’ve definitely caught me muttering a curse or two when you zoom by.
Picture this: my son is happily drawing with sidewalk chalk, while my daughter is squirming in my grip, eager to explore the world around her. She’s a little adventurer, always trying to dart off toward the street, and it’s my job to keep her safe. But you? You make my job a lot harder when you speed down the street like it’s a racetrack.
The speed limit here is 25 mph, but you’re clearly flying past that. I’ve seen you chatting on your phone or, even worse, texting while you zoom by. Sometimes it’s a young driver, music blaring and completely absorbed in their phone. I know the girl you’re rushing to pick up, and I wonder if her mom knows how recklessly you drive. Seriously, SLOW DOWN!
Then there are the older drivers, like that sweet lady in the Buick. I know she’s a kind neighbor, but I’ve seen her cruising down the street at alarming speeds. Doesn’t she have kids or grandkids? Doesn’t she care about the little ones playing nearby? I really like her, but come on—SLOW DOWN!
And let’s not forget about the parents in the minivans. I can’t even believe it sometimes. You’ve got your own precious cargo, yet you zoom past me like it’s no big deal. I get it; life is busy, but think about the little ones you’re scaring. SLOW DOWN!
Even the middle-aged guys who wave as they drive by—please know that my flailing arms are not a wave back. I’m just trying to signal you to SLOW DOWN!
We’re all trying to look out for our kids, and I’m doing my part by keeping a watchful eye. But it’s frustrating when it feels like the street is your personal speedway. From one parent to another, I’m asking you to please take it easy. Next time I see you, I might just have to call you out.

To sum it up, we all want a safe neighborhood for our kids to play in. So, let’s work together to keep the streets safe and friendly.
