Is It (Really, Really) Hot In Here, Or Is It Just Me?

After a long hiatus from outdoor activities, we decided it was time to tackle our garden and lawn, which had become quite the eyesore. We spent hours outside, filling up six yard waste bags with weeds and debris. The satisfaction was worth it—our neighborhood property values were bouncing back to where they should be.

However, come Sunday, every movement felt like a workout. My arms, legs, shoulders, and back were all protesting this newfound labor. My partner, Jake, was feeling the same way, while our kids, who had helped out throughout the day, seemed completely unfazed.

When Monday rolled around, I headed into the clinic where I work as a doctor, feeling a little better after surviving the initial temperature swings of perimenopause and the aftermath of our gardening battle. I arrived early, eager to start my day, and struck up a conversation with one of the medical assistants, Lisa. She was sharing stories about her adorable three-year-old son, and, of course, I asked to see a picture. He was just as cute as she described!

Then Lisa asked me if I had any children or grandchildren. That question caught me off guard—it was the first time anyone had asked if I had grandchildren. I’m in my mid-40s and definitely at an age where I could be a grandmother, but let’s just say my mind was racing with thoughts about what that question implied. I dream of having grandchildren in my future!

I often tell my kids how much I cherish every stage of life and how it just keeps getting better. I’ve earned every hot flash (and, yes, I wouldn’t mind if they took a permanent vacation), every gray hair, and even the achy muscles after a day of gardening. I’ve come to terms with the years since I’ve been carded, and I’m embracing this no-nonsense phase of life where I don’t put up with any drama.

So, if you ever want to chat, please ask about my kids rather than my nonexistent grandkids. And when those grandchildren do come along, I’d love for you to be surprised and say how youthful I look for a grandmother!

Oh, and let’s not forget to crank up that air-conditioning!

In summary, while the gardening may have left my body sore, it sparked reflections on life stages and the joys of motherhood. As I embrace where I am now, I look forward to the day I can proudly share stories of my grandchildren with everyone.
