To My Daughter on the Brink of Middle School
Hey Sweetheart,
Before you know it, you’ll be stepping into the world of middle school! Right now, you’re bubbling with excitement about meeting new friends, embarking on fresh adventures, and enjoying a bit more freedom. I’m just as thrilled as you are! This is a new chapter, and I can’t wait to see how you flourish.
But I have to be honest—I’m also a bit anxious. I’ve heard countless tales about kids your age making questionable choices, dealing with peer pressure, and misusing social media. You might have heard similar stories too. Part of me believes you’re too smart for that, but another part knows I can’t be an oblivious parent.
As the oldest, we’re all venturing into unknown territory together. We’ll be navigating the ups and downs of adolescence, and while there will be moments of smooth sailing, there will also be choppy waters. So, here are some friendly pieces of advice to keep in mind. If you ever feel lost, just remember I’m right there with you, ready to help steer you back on course.
- Put in the Effort: Schoolwork should be your top priority. Everything else, like sports and socializing, comes after. I know perfection isn’t the goal, but giving your best effort is what counts. You’ll feel proud of yourself, and so will I.
- Be Courageous: Middle school will bring a mix of experiences—some fabulous, others not so much. When faced with challenges, stand firm in your beliefs, even if it feels “uncool” at the moment. Your bravery will be remembered long after the moment has passed.
- Stay True to Yourself: You are one-of-a-kind and amazing! Don’t ever feel pressured to change just to fit in. If someone can’t appreciate your uniqueness, that’s their loss, not yours.
- Follow Your Conscience: When friends push you to do something that doesn’t feel right, trust that gut feeling! We’ve taught you the difference between right and wrong, and you’ll always know in your heart what to do.
- Get Organized: Life is only going to get busier from here. Now is the perfect time to learn how to manage your time effectively. Procrastination is the enemy! Building good habits now will serve you well in middle school, high school, and beyond.
- Practice Kindness: Middle school can be awkward for everyone. Always remember that everyone has their own struggles. Treat others how you’d like to be treated. Compassion and courtesy never go out of style.
- Believe in Yourself: You are incredible! Never forget that you have the power to achieve whatever you set your mind to. I truly believe you will make a difference in this world.
- Choose Your Friends Wisely: There’s an old saying: “You are defined by the company you keep.” If someone is negative or tries to change who you are, it’s time to reevaluate that friendship. Surround yourself with uplifting people.
- We’re Always Here for You: Your dad and I will always love you, no matter what. Whether you have questions, need guidance, or just want to share your joys, we’re here. Your problems—big or small—are important to us. Just talk to us; we’re always ready to listen.
- Enjoy the Ride: This is a time full of new experiences. While there will be challenges, don’t forget to smile and have fun! Make new friends, laugh, and soak it all in—this chapter will zoom by faster than you think!
So there you go! I’m here cheering you on every step of the way. If you’re interested in more about the journey ahead, check out our other blog posts like this one or learn from the experts at Make a Mom. For any pregnancy-related questions, WebMD is an excellent resource to have on hand.
