Tips for Navigating Unmedicated Labor
It feels like everyone around me is expecting a baby! I know ten women due soon, and that’s not counting the countless others I see during my daily outings — all of us seeking the sweet relief of air conditioning. I’m not sure what was happening nine months ago, but it seems like a global celebration of unprotected fun took place. Kudos to everyone involved!
With so many inquiries about my own unmedicated labor experience, I decided to share some tips that might help make the journey a bit smoother.
1. Discover Your Mantra
My birthing coach asked if I had a mantra to focus on during labor. She suggested something uplifting like “I am one with the universe.” I, on the other hand, wanted her to shout “Hurry up!” at my baby to speed things along. Ultimately, I found my own mantra that resonated deeply with me: “Please, someone end this!”
2. Get Creative
In the delivery room, I decided against an epidural, so I asked if they had laughing gas available. Unfortunately, I was told that my only option was the dreaded epidural. So I got imaginative and jokingly suggested they hit me over the head with a mallet to knock me out. When the nurse declined, I let my frustrations fly. It lightened the mood, even if I later apologized for my outburst — after all, the nurse deserves respect while dealing with all the chaos!
3. Find the Humor
When it came time to push, I noticed my medical team donning what looked like hazmat suits. As they stared down at my birth canal, I couldn’t help but think, “This is the strangest party I’ve ever been to!” This thought made me chuckle and somehow helped me push through the pain. Plus, when my child inevitably becomes a moody teenager, I can remind them of the ridiculous circumstances surrounding their entrance into the world.
4. Curate a Playlist
I made a birth playlist with songs that inspired me, like Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire” and Ice Cube’s “You Can Do It.” While I didn’t get to listen during labor, choose tunes that resonate with you, and set the vibe in the room. Music can be a powerful companion through this experience.
5. Be Determined
The key to an unmedicated labor is sheer willpower. You have to want it more than anything else. The pain will be intense, and there will be tempting offers for pain relief. You must summon the strength to say “no” to those offers and stay strong. This journey is not for the faint-hearted!
6. Chat with Your Baby
Now’s a great time for a heart-to-heart with your little one. Let them know a speedy labor would be appreciated. My daughter got the message and arrived in just six hours, earning her all the ponies. It seems that a little communication can go a long way!
7. Listen to Your Body
If your stubbornness starts to wane and the pain becomes unbearable, don’t hesitate to opt for medication. There are no awards for enduring the pain if it’s not right for you. Create your own unique birth story, and if you choose pain relief, enjoy it without guilt. Remember, the ultimate prize is welcoming your baby into the world, and that’s magical.
