What Happened to Politeness?

Every time I catch the news or scroll through my social media feed, I’m bombarded with stories of terrible events and people behaving in ways that make you question humanity. It leaves me wondering—what’s going on? Is it environmental factors? Are we being impacted by something like GMOs? Or is it just a general decline in civility?

Let’s get real here; the issue is manners. It all boils down to a serious lack of basic politeness.

Rude individuals are raising more rude individuals, and honestly, it’s concerning. If this keeps up, we might end up living in a world void of kindness—who wants to live in such a place?

When I mention manners, I’m not just talking about saying “please” and “thank you” or making eye contact. I’m referring to adults who let doors slam shut in front of children without glancing back, or those who won’t let a mother with a stroller go ahead in line. It’s also about the person who sees someone trip but doesn’t stop to help because they’re too busy.

I’m talking about people who interrupt conversations, show disrespect to others, and feel entitled to take whatever they want without acknowledging those around them. That is what’s wrong with society today.

I understand we’re all juggling a million things at once. Life can be hectic, and it takes effort to teach our kids about respect and empathy. Parenting is tough work, and it’s easy to overlook the importance of instilling manners in our children. But if we don’t prioritize this, who will?

Kids are naturally self-centered, but it’s our job to teach them that other people’s feelings matter too. If you’re not willing to teach your kids manners, then it falls to the rest of us to pick up the slack.

Perhaps we need to collectively remind those who forget the basics of politeness. If we come together in a movement of kindness, we might just inspire others to remember that everyone deserves a little decency. Whether someone is different from you or not, holding the door open is a simple act of kindness that we all can manage.

I don’t want to live in a world filled with rudeness, and I trust you feel the same. I’m committed to doing my part—how about you? If you agree with me in this quest for a more courteous society, I’d appreciate it if you’d help remind my kids to be polite when I’m not around, and I’ll gladly do the same for yours.

Let’s keep the simple words of “please” and “thank you” alive.
