That Night We Embraced Adventure with Our Kids
County fairs can be a tough sell: the heat is relentless, the food is a guilty pleasure that’s expensive to boot, and you always leave feeling like you’ve been through a dust storm. The crowds? Unbearable. The lines? Endless. Not to mention the armfuls of stuff you accumulate along the way.
But oh, how kids adore it. One evening, as we drove past the fair bustling with activity, I heard the excited gasps from the backseat.
“Please, Mom! Can we go? Look at that ferris wheel!”
“No, not tonight, kids. We need to head home and prepare for bed. School is in the morning.”
It’s always easier to visit the fair before school starts, but this year’s schedule was different. We’re mindful of our budget, aiming to be frugal, and we typically limit activities on school nights. To top it off, family was visiting, but with no set plans for the next day. Out of nowhere, I felt a spontaneous urge to embrace the “you only live once” mentality and suggested we head to the fair. Why not switch things up?
So, we decided to say yes to our kids. We stayed out until 10:30 p.m. on a school night, letting them experience the fair rides. We indulged in overpriced games, like popping balloons and ringing the bell with a sledgehammer, while clutching our cheesy prizes that could’ve been purchased at a dollar store.
We devoured gigantic corn dogs and cotton candy, and the kids ended up with ketchup-covered faces and sticky fingers. My youngest rolled in the dust, pretending to be defeated after a playful inflatable sword duel with his dad.
We enjoyed the merry-go-round, tugboat rides, and even watched a daring cannon act and some thrilling stunt bikers. The kids were thrilled to see their parents laugh like they never have before, getting soaked on one of those wild rides. We swung high on the swings and let the little one fish for rubber ducks for prizes, staying late enough that the lines for the kiddie rides dwindled to nothing.
With a sense of joy, I gave in to every request for junk food and games, resulting in stuffed animals, four swords, and smiles that lit up the night. The boys chattered animatedly in the backseat on our way home, swinging their neon-lit swords and giggling at the patterns they created on the car roof. I drove in silence, beaming with happiness. Breaking from our usual routine felt exhilarating.
Once home, we reminisced about our fun-filled night before tucking the little one into bed. I let the older one stay up late and skipped bath time. We all snuggled into bed, a little dirty but utterly content. It was truly the best night ever.
The next day, the kids went to school sporting dusty shoes and ride stamps on their arms. Some may have thought they looked a mess, but they were brimming with joy. There are plenty of less-than-appealing aspects of the county fair, yet for those few hours, we let all worries go. It felt amazing to say yes, and I hope my boys will always treasure that magical evening when we embraced adventure.
