How to Foster 40 Years of Amazing Friendships
I never imagined that my childhood days spent playing tag and picking dodgeball teams would lead me to find three incredible friends who have become lifelong companions. Sometimes I wonder how we’ve managed to put up with each other for so long, but over the years, we’ve built a bond that’s truly unbreakable. Here’s why I feel so lucky to have these fabulous ladies in my life and the secrets that have helped our friendships thrive for over forty years:
- Send Notes. Back in elementary school, we were the masters of note-writing. Nowadays, we might stick to quick texts and emails, but there was something special about crafting notes with our own silly codes. Even now, a note from these girls would hit differently. We’ve grown past the small stuff, like who’s dating whom—mostly!
- Perfect the Art of Folding Notes. Only true friends can fold notes so tightly that parents would need a crowbar to pry them open. Keeping those notes close was crucial—losing one could expose our deepest secrets!
- Bike Rides. Yes, I mean actual bicycles—not spin classes! Some of my fondest memories come from long bike rides with my friends, hoping to catch sight of a cute boy while hiding behind a tree. And remember to snag a few bucks from your mom’s purse for those much-needed Payday bars!
- Sleepovers Are Essential. The secret to a successful sleepover? Don’t sleep! We spent countless nights chatting about everything and nothing. If someone dozed off, we’d pull some classic pranks, like freezing their bra. Those late-night sing-alongs to our favorite songs? Priceless.
- Watch Scary Movies Together. Who else will reassure you that Freddy Krueger isn’t real after a terrifying movie night? Or run with you to the door, convinced something is lurking in the garden? Good times—but I still hold a grudge for making me watch that!
- Don’t Be Afraid to Argue. Getting mad at each other is part of the deal. A genuine apology can lead to some of the most meaningful heart-to-heart conversations.
- Be There in Tough Times. When your bestie’s heart gets shattered by a jerk boyfriend, be her shoulder to cry on. You both know how it feels, and that support is invaluable.
- Celebrate the Big Moments. Attend her wedding and shed those happy tears. Embrace her husband as part of your circle. Respecting your friends means embracing their loved ones too.
- Welcome New Life. When your friend becomes a mom, share your own experiences and let her know it’s okay to feel lost sometimes. No guidebook can replace the bond you share with a fellow mom.
- Support Her in Loss. Grieve together when she loses a parent. Just being there, helping with the little things, can mean the world. I remember my friends showing up for me when I lost my dad, and their presence helped me heal.
- Be a Rock During Tough Breakups. When her marriage ends, be her biggest cheerleader. Talk about the ex (but maybe don’t question her choices too much!). When she’s ready to love again, be there every step of the way.
- Embrace the Next Chapter. When she remarries, befriend her new husband. He’ll appreciate having you around, and it’ll strengthen the whole connection.
- Celebrate Their Kids. Take pride in your friends’ children and share parenting tips. Laugh together about the joys and struggles of parenthood.
- Keep the Connection Alive. Use social media to stay in touch. Send random texts, plan visits, and let them know how much they mean to you.
- Follow Up After Visits. Post-gathering texts about how you can’t wait for the next get-together are a must. Spice them up with some fun photos from your night out!
Once you’ve shared life’s ups and downs with these friends, you know they’re not going anywhere. You may go days without talking, but when they reach out, you drop everything. Your families get it—you need that hour-long catch-up call. These friendships may not be blood-related, but they’re as close as family.
