Reflections on Gun Ownership and Safety
As a proud gun owner, I have a couple of pistols, a rifle, and a shotgun, not to mention a (now-expired) concealed carry permit. I’ve been around firearms since I was young, and I hold strong views about gun control that I think need to be shared.
1. Gun Shows and Cash Sales
At gun shows, I’ve seen more illegal cash transactions than I can count. Vendors often sell firearms in the parking lot, bypassing essential background checks and ownership transfers. This isn’t just a few isolated incidents; it’s a common practice in many states, and it’s alarming.
2. Dangerous Practices at Ranges
Every trip to the gun range reveals someone acting recklessly with their firearm. I’ve been swept with a gun more times than I can remember—it’s a terrifying experience! I’ve watched people use the wrong ammunition and fire guns they can’t manage, leading to dangerous kickback. These individuals think they’re responsible owners, but it only takes one mistake to cause a serious accident.
3. Handling Guns Under the Influence
I’ve seen people use firearms when they’re drunk, tired, or angry. I would never put myself or others at risk like that. It’s just plain reckless.
4. A Close Call
Once, a friend of my ex-boyfriend pointed a loaded gun at me just to show off. I dropped to the ground, realizing he had forgotten it was loaded. This person is a high-ranking officer in the Navy, and it really made me think about how easily accidents can happen.
5. Concealed Carry Classes
The concealed carry permit class in North Carolina is surprisingly easy to pass. After two days of instruction and a simple test, you only need to demonstrate that you can hit a broad target. This low bar for training is concerning.
6. Misguided Hero Mentality
The idea that a “good guy with a gun” can save the day is problematic. Without combat training, the chances of accidentally harming another civilian or being misidentified by law enforcement are far too high. Even with my training, I know that in a real-life crisis, I might contribute to the chaos rather than help.
7. Concerns About the NRA
I used to support the NRA, but I left after a year. Their messaging promotes fear about losing guns, despite no evidence supporting such claims. The propaganda is troubling and made me reconsider where I want to put my money.
8. Home Defense Weapons
I understand the desire for home protection—I’ve experienced loss firsthand. However, weapons like the AK-47 have no place in personal defense; they were made for military use. A 12-gauge shotgun is a much more practical choice for safeguarding your home. Research consistently supports this view, and it’s critical we prioritize safety over firepower.
These reflections come from my experience as a licensed and trained gun owner. I actively support organizations like the Brady Campaign and Everytown for Gun Safety, and I plan to join Moms Demand Action. I find it hard to grasp why other gun owners don’t back these groups—they’re not after our guns; they want to bring common sense to gun ownership, which is something every responsible owner should advocate for.

In summary, as a gun owner, I believe that common sense regulations can enhance safety without infringing on rights. It’s essential to advocate for responsible ownership and support measures that protect us all.
