Teens Take a Stand Against Dress Code with Scarlet Letters
It’s no secret that school dress codes can be pretty ridiculous, but a group of high school students has come up with a clever way to protest what they see as unfair standards. At the Charleston County School of the Arts (CCSOA), students have grown tired of a dress code they deem “sexist” and “unjust.” Their unique form of protest? Wearing a scarlet letter “A” pinned to their clothes, inspired by Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel, The Scarlet Letter, which tells the story of Hester Prynne, a woman in the 15th century forced to wear a scarlet “A” due to her past.
The students believe that the dress code unfairly targets girls, leading to “slut-shaming,” while boys are allowed more freedom in their clothing choices. Take Lily Martinez, for instance; she shared that a counselor suggested “heavier girls” needed to wear longer skirts, while boys stroll around in tank tops without a second glance. Lily doesn’t oppose dress codes in general, but she argues that the double standard must be addressed. That’s why she rallied her peers to join in the protest—over 100 students and faculty have joined in, proudly showcasing their scarlet letters on social media.
CCSOA’s principal, Mark Thompson, has acknowledged the students’ “peaceful activism” and praised their initiative as an important reminder for staff to apply rules fairly. It’s refreshing to see these students, often labeled as self-involved, come together for a common cause and express their beliefs in such an innovative way. Whether or not the school decides to revise its dress code, they’ve undoubtedly sparked a conversation and raised awareness around this issue.
